Unexpected CC charge

Unexpected CC charge

Hi, I opened my account on May 15th, 2007; there was a promotion in which DH gave me 500GB, 5TB, 5 domains, for $50, and one year later, be charged $119.

I just received an email saying I was charged $119, and not even a full year has passed, so this was an unexpected charge (even more so, I guess its my fault for not checking if the AutoPay feature was enabled or not), and now I got a POSITIVE BALANCE... How do I get a refund of my money? I TRULY need it back! As in back by today, January 15th, the day I pay my college.

I attach the email I received from DH (btw, notice "today's date"):

The same thing just happened to me, and the message I got also says "today's date: 2008-12-30". I have emailed billing@dreamhost.com and hopefully they will refund soon.

youre not the only one, i just received a charge also, i believe it may have something to do with the "server upgrade" or whatever they emailed about.. not a good thing to charge people out of their bank accounts, especially those low on funds :(

I think this happened to a lot of people. Maybe even everyone? (Fortunately the CC they automatically billed was, in my case, expired.) I suspect some servers' systemtime went forward a year when they were "upgrading the network". I see they've acknowledged this at dreamhoststatus: http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/01/15/billing-issues/

If a bunch of people got erroneously charged... well, that's a mess. Especially if overdraft charges apply.

what a mess!!!!!

I got this message from Dreamhost today...

This is just a notice that your DreamHost Account #XXXXXX
("XXXXX's Account") has a balance of $119.40 (including any charges not
due until 2009-01-28), with $119.40 due (since 2008-12-28).

You also have $119.40 past due (owed since 2008-11-28), and if
by 2009-01-28 you do not pay at least the $119.40 part, your
account will be automatically suspended until payment is received.
...............................

I signed up for a 1-year web hosting package on 2007-06-28 and paid for it in full. Why am I being sent this message when I am only 6months into this account?

FUNNY THIS IS WHEN I LOGIN to my account under Billing/Manage Account its says You currently owe: $0!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted on: 2008-01-15 02:10:00

The same thing's happened to me.

WHAT DO YOU OWE MONEY FOR?

We have the last payment on this account to be $140.80 on 2006-08-06 06:32:03.

Since then the following charges have been made to the account:

2008-08-06 - $190.80 for "My Crazy Domain Insane" through 2010-08-05.

2008-08-06 - $190.80 for "My Crazy Domain Insane" through 2010-08-05.

They say I owe $381.60 but thankfully the credit card on the account was an old one that they failed to charge, else I'd be contacting the credit card company and my bank complaining of fraudulent charges.

I assume a lot of people are now looking to change host. Any recommendations?

I am more than worried, because my bank is closed at this time, and if I get overdrafted, is DH going to pay the extra.charges? They better! This is a HUGE mess! And man, did I got pissed off when I read "Severity: Medium"!!

Edit: Well, they finally changed the severity to HIGH!Edited by D14852001neko on 01/15/08 02:54 AM (server time).

Add me to the list.

This is just a notice that your DreamHost Account #xxxxx
("xxxxx Account") has a balance of $238.80 (including any charges not
due until 2009-01-05), with $238.80 due (since 2008-12-05).

You also have $238.80 past due (owed since 2008-11-05), and if
by 2009-01-05 you do not pay at least the $238.80 part, your
account will be automatically suspended until payment is received.

They also tried to charge my card repeatedly on 4/5/08(!?!) which was rejected due to duplicate transactions. Thank you fraud protection!
I log in and I'm paid in full (0$ balance as well), not due to be billed until April anyway...

Problem is, seems they took all my sites off line because of "non-payment". Now, I'm small potatoes - but I'll still have to explain why some of my folks sites disappeared this morning.
UGH!!!!

I got the same thing and I'm completely cancelling with DreamHost due to this error and the fact that my renewal date was January 21st! Yet they saw fit to charge my credit card a full 6 days early taking away my decision on whether to renew or not. I'm asking for a full refund and I will host elsewhere due to these 2 major mistakes on their part!!!

I just got hit for it too. 2 years all at once. I figured I would throw my voice in the thread too just to make some noise.

It sucks but I know I am lucky being able to absorb that cost for now. I hope they fix it soon and everyone that may get nailed with bank fees get those refunded as well.

I have to pay on October 10, 2008, and they charged me RIGHT NOW? Looks like a serious system bug, hope they'll fix it...

My CC was not charged (LUCKILY, mine was changed recently), but all of my modest DH Rewards got transfered to DH this morning... :(

Hope all will be fixed soon...

I got the email too. It looks like someone screwed up the automatic billing software. So far I have not seen a charge on my card just yet but the email did say the error was due to duplicate charge. Whoever fucked up is about to get a bunch of hell rained down on them.

Now as a programmer I can understand that these things can happen but as a programmer I also know that if you are working on something that sensitive you do it in a sandbox that has no hope of reaching real money.

Because of the double charge ... My home property tax check and my county school tax check will both bounce. I'm definitely cancelling my DreamHost account.

Double charge and Charging me early. These are 2 costly mistakes that should have never happened from a company that should be at the top of its game considering they deal with the dang internet. There is no excuse as far as I'm concerned and DreamHost should be ashamed of themselves for betraying my trust and doing not only one UNAUTHORIZED DEBIT BUT TWO. If they give me any problems I'm going straight to my state's attorney general and to the online BBB.

No kidding. I just got sacked with a $283-ish charge. Luckily it hasn't shown up on my credit card yet, but you can bet that when it shows up as 'Pending', I'mma gonna plead to Wells Fargo to deny that charge.

Seriously, 'award winning service' my ass. I understand accidents happen sometimes, but this is just inexcusable and stupefying.

Suffice to say that when my domain expires, I'm going to be moving someplace else that's FAR more secure and reliable.

No, you cannot reach them by phone, and I'd be very surprised if even those who have the callback option on their account will get a callback today.

I wonder whether there is anybody that was NOT hit by this; from the amount of responses here and on the status blog (and the no doubt silend majority not posting), it seems as though this might affect EVERYBODY. Every single customer of Dreamhost. That's not "just" thousands of dollars ... That's millions.

The person I spoke to, said keep an eye my account and I could dispute the charge the minute that it posts if I wanted to. So I will watch closely and see.

Happened to me, too, and if the charges aren't reversed soon, I'm going to be facing an over-draft fee for upcoming bills, which will probably be another seventy bucks, which, in my eyes, would be DH's responsibility. Of course, when I followed the instructions on the email they sent out, which was to email billing@dreamhost.com, the mail bounced, and they said to log in to http://www.dreamhost.com/contact.cgi, which brought up nothing but an error message, so I tried logging into my web panel to get support, which just gave me a 404 error, so i tried fishing around for a phone number, but, of course, nobody every has actual phone numbers to call for support anymore, as email and navigating KB's is so much cheaper.

End result: I'm down $119.00 on an already skin-tight budget, and facing additional charges and hardships if said charges are not quickly reversed. I am NOT a happy camper, and even if the charges are reversed on time, I'm hoping for some sort of compensation for the massive frustration I'm feeling right now.

Holy cow! At least it wasn't a security breach. I'm also glad that there isn't some poor tech guy whose job might have been on the line for his mistake.

I wonder how the reversals will play out with respect to the overdrafts that people are indicating. I know that banks will retry any drafts that failed in the hopes that they eventually clear, but I'm not clear on how credit transactions work or when fees are assessed.

I remember back a few years ago when our payroll company messed up everyone's direct deposit. In order to "help" everyone, they wire transferred funds into everyone's accounts. Of course, this meant that wire transfer fees were assessed to both of my direct deposit bank accounts. They said they would cover it after we sent our bank statements as proof, but of course by the time we received our statements it was the next month and I bet more than half of us just ate their error. I remember thinking at the time that I wished they could have just used the normal ACH system and remunerated anyone who had any problems rather than causing everyone in the company to be assessed wire transfer fees.

I dunno if there are any copyright issues, but I'll copy and paste from http://www.dreamhoststatus.com for expediency:

In reply to:

Severity: High Resolved: No

We are currently aware of some billing inaccuracies which we will be resolving later today. All of these issues will be resolved, and any billing errors corrected. We sincerely apologize for any hassle this has created.

- UPDATE Tue Jan 15 04:13:17 PST 2008 -

The problem has been found and corrected. We are currently going through all erroneously charged accounts and refunding money. Stay tuned for further updates.

- UPDATE Tue Jan 15 07:25:16 PST 2008 -

Scripts are still running to correct the original problem. Last night, this guy ran a standard billing cycle to clean up stragglers from 2007. Unfortunately, the biller was ran for 2008 (December 31st, 2008 to be exact). This caused everyone to be billed as if today was 2008-12-31, wreaking the havoc that we are so sorry you had to be put through.

There is currently no ETA on when the “fix it” script will finish, but this post will not be resolved until it is. The script will reverse all erroneous charges and notify you via e-mail of the transaction reversal. If you receive an all clear e-mail, and are still having any problems with your account and/or charges, please contact support immediately.

Once again, we are all *extremely* sorry for the mishap. Thank you for your continued patience while we clean up our mess.

Re: Unexpected CC charge

Now I'm doubly worried. I'm concerned that this will cost me a bunch of money because of overdrafts, and I'm concerned about whether or not Dreamhost will be able to rebound from this. There are going to be major repricussions, clearly. Best case scenario, there are going to lose a lot of customers, worst case scenario, they could be hit with the cost of God knows how much when the demands start rolling in to pay for overdrafts, unavailable funds charges, bounced check fees (from checks that bounced due to not having enough money in the bank after the hefty charges from them), and, of course, there will probably be some bad press as well.

This does not bode well...

The GOOD news is they are trying to re-bill the wrong card, so it isn't going through, the BAD news is, they are threatening to suspend my website, and none of the links in the email they sent me even work so I can't contact anyone there, the GOOD news is that if it's happening to everyone, I guess they are working on the problem!

Hang in there everyone!!!!

I'm really surprised that their CC processing service authorized so many charges. You would think they would be suspicious when the usual monhly charges suddenly have been quattuorvigenupled!

I also was charged this amount and will also face similar dilemma of overdraft fees if not corrected by today. Now I realize the importance of having a LIVE PERSON PHONE NUMBER to call because I am unable to access the support page and this requires immediate service to prevent overdraft charges and potential bounced checks. I'm almost certainly ready to cancel my account resulting from this issue. This is really, really bad news!

According to my billing e-mail, some of the transactions errored out.

"The processor returned: Duplicate trans: Transaction in progress"

I hope that is the case for the majority of users. I really hope Dreamhost pulls through this without losing too many customers.

I was initially mad when I read my email this morning, thinking my account was compromised or that I was somehow signed up for some pre-bill-for-two-years plan. Although I am disappointed they have not made an announcement on their front page, and you have to go to the "emergency status" page for information, I will continue to be a customer.

However, I am removing my bank debit card and using a credit card for future billing as soon as the panel is up.

I'm wondering how exactly a support number is going to help you in this case. Care to expand on that? Because uhhhh... I don't see any logic in it.

Let's assume for a moment that you're one of 50,000 customers that was billed incorrectly. We'll also assume DreamHost has right around 50 employees (which I believe is a fairly accurate number to date). Assuming each customer calls to bitch for a minimum of 5minutes each call, one call per customer, that would be 288 customer complaints answered per day (60mins*24hrs = 1440mins/day :: (1440mins/day)/(5mins/customer per employee) = 288 customers/day :: 288 customers/day * 50 employees = 14,400 customers answered per day) shocked

Going by those stats and assuming each employee is working around the clock, 24hrs/day, we can assume it's going to take about 4-5 days to answer all of those calls. Which are just letting the customer complain - they aren't actually resolving the issue or getting their money back - they are just simply calling to make themselves feel better.
What an absolute waste of foo time and resources.

So please explain to me how that's going to help their customers get their money back or fix the issue at hand?
Or does it just make you feel better? Maybe DreamHost should buy their customers little teddy bears that they can hold at night to make them feel better too..

"Maybe DreamHost should buy their customers little teddy bears that they can hold at night to make them feel better too.. "

Sounds like a good promotion to me... because:

a) they're dreamhost, and who doesn't like a teddy bear when they go to bed when they're a kid
b) wouldn't cost much

The Dreamhost Blog post on the billing error is up. There's no mention of teddy bears for the injured, but there is this:

In reply to:

If, because of this billing mistake, you somehow incurred some fees from your bank or credit card company, please let us know after tomorrow (today we are just replying to all 10,000+ billing messages with a generic explanation) and we’ll do our best to make it right for you.

Now maybe if you send them an email saying that the mean, old, nasty bank took your teddy bear...

Well, the panel works and I have changed my credit card info to something other than my debit card. I highly recommend others do the same!

Also, something I didn't notice before, is you can set a limit to how much they will charge your credit card in one day. That setting will help when this never happens ever again, ever!

It is the second day and although I was not affected (wasn't dumb enough to give them automatic billing to my account), my colleague who did has still not received the refund for the $400 they took from his account. So people who weren't refunded on the same banking day WILL be bouncing things and acquiring additional charges.

I think perhaps what mac was trying to communicate with you unsuccessfully was that the dreamhost team does not moderate or monitor these threads. They're for the use of customers to communicate with each other. If you no longer wish to be a customer because of a mistake on their part, that makes sense, however declaring the vehemence with which you're angry will do you no good here.

We are customers. Nobody here can help. The thread evolved because people needed to ask about billing irregularities, not because people wanted to whine and yell and generally make a nuisance of themselves. Please quit the ad hominem attacks, put your toys back in your pram and settle down.

I did not come here for help. I came here to state my opinion that this is BS! And I will continue to bitch until I get my money back! I am a striker standing outside the DreamHost building sharing on how pissed off I am infront of the public... deal with it. I attacked no one. DreamHost attacked me. You obviously didn't have over $900 withdrawn from your bank account without permission.

Re: Unexpected CC charge

Posted by: cwg
Posted on: 2008-01-16 08:19:00

Not trying to be nitpicky, but you did give permission for the withdrawals when you signed up for automatic payment.

There are probably lessons to be learnt all around. Dreamhost needs more safeguards in its billing process, and I, for one, will never automatically pay anything other than essentials (mortgage, lights, etc) out of my bank account. Everything else autopays off of my credit card so I can dispute the charge if needed.

Bitching here won't do any good at all. With a few rare exceptions, every post in this forum is from a customer. By lashing out in a blind rage, you are in fact just upsetting customers who may well be in the same boat as you. There are mechanisms available for contacting DreamHost themselves, and you should use them instead.

Like I said earlier in this thread... this did not affect me... at all...

You know why? I'm aware enough to not allow a company who bills me irregularly take money out of my account automatically.

The only things I have on auto pay are things which require it (as part of the terms of service).

Keep in mind that though DreamHost may have refunded your account already, the Credit Card companies that your accounts are linked to can take up to 30 days (by law) to make that refund reflect on your account. It typically takes my bank 14 days to reflect a refund. It may take more or less time dependent upon your bank/cc company's policies.

Hey, no personal attacks on the forums, please! :)

(or is simile allowed while metaphor is banned?)

Again, sympathy and good luck to those who have experienced problems due to this. My wife has debit card balance issues so I'll have to eventually figure out whether this has had an impact on her account. I am reassured by Dreamhosts reassurance that they'll take care of any overdraft fees and such that were incurred by her as a result of their error.

Like I said earlier, my former employer once screwed up payroll instructions to their bank and so everyone got paid a day late by wire transfer. This was a big screwup and cost everyone a lot of money and caused some people heartache from missed rent/mortgage payments since it was the end-of-month paycheck. Did that make them a bad employer? No, except for this error, they were a pretty darned good employer. Did I have the right to use that as an excuse to stop doing business with them? Yes, but that would not be a very smart move on my part, I think.

I think what i was trying to say, though, like the irate poster, i was in a "hmffff" moment, is that complaining here about the money dreamhost owes you is like me complaining here about my client who hasn't paid me 4 invoices since april of last year. It's pretty moot. This is a customer to customer forum....and i doubt that any customer here will wire $900 to your account.

The only way for you to resolve is to send in, through your webid, a support request to billing.

Sorry if I was brash. I am sick of people acting like it's the rest of us customers fault this happened.

I think all the credit requests have gone out to Visa/MC/Amex. My understanding is that coded as a "credit" transaction and not a "pin" transaction. I would call your bank to find out what they think about when the credit will appear in your account. They may even be able to see the credit request through their internal systems even before it is posted to your account and be able to tell you what their process is for posting it.

I was charged 3 times and I am still waiting on my money. I just got off the phone with my bank and there are no refunds, credits, or anything of the nature in the process of happening. They (my bank) gave me information that they need from DH in order to follow up on their end, but my inquiry to support/billing here at DH are largely unanswered, with the exception of a form letter that did not fully address the situation. My bank has even offered to contact the vendor (DH) in a 3 way phone conference to get this sorted out, but....
Short of it, the banks cannot tell us anything if nothing is taking place.

Wow.. this looks like the worst black eye DreamHost has had so far... it's made it into the Wikipedia article on the company, too. I was fortunate enough to be completely unaffected; when I switched to the new plan a few months ago I took the 3-year prepay option so I still won't owe anything on December 31, thus no charges were made for my account. My experience as a Dreamhost customer since 2001 has been overwhelmingly positive, but the "horror stories" that come up from time to time are a bit unsettling.

Yeah, it's one of those incidents that makes you actually want them to be a bit more bureaucratic with their financial software.

I do wonder what the impact will be on their business. Conventional wisdom, of course, is that they will lose business. OTOH, there's always the saying "There's no such thing as bad press."

Agreed. I am extremely pissed about this situation. Not Dreamhost so much as the situation itself. The whole thing was a messy mistake, but ultimately, it seems like it was just that: a mistake. An accident. A wrong digit entered into a program at the wrong time by one guy. It could have happened to any of us; but it did cause me enough problems that I feel entitled to be pissed at the situation itself.

However, my biggest fear is what this will mean for Dreamhost. I've been a customer with them since the day of their first anniversary, and I've had an overwhelmingly good experience with them; and I have a lot of respect for how they've handled this incident (and indeed, any incident that has come up. They never resort to the usual corporate tactic of "ignore the angry customers and make a press release, downplaying the incident as much as possible, and for God's sake, admit to as little as you can). Still, this was a major thing. A lot of people were hit with overdrafts. This could effect people's credit. There are going to be a lot of customers who leave after this, and I can't deny they have a right to. And there's going to be some bad press, and undoubtedly DH will have to pay out quite a bit of money to cover charges and other financial issues stemming from this. I pray to God they pull through it all. I don't want to loose my hosting.

Although I'm peeved at DH, I'm actually more pissed at my bank. The account that I had that on only had $2 on it. Two measly dollars(I use that bank acct for incoming ebay payments only). Anyways, sometimes when I know there's a couple bucks in there, I'll get a pack of smokes or a six pack or something, and I've had it declined in the past for $5-$10 charges, when there's something like $20 in there....yet they clear a $150 charge when theres $2 in there?!?!? Decline that sh*t!

blah blah blah

I feel for the people it hit hard.

Is it required to keep a cc# on file with DH? If so, it looks like I may be getting a pre-paid one and leaving a nickel on there. If not, I think I pay Paypal anyways, so I don't even know why I have one on there?

Posting the same thing over and over again, especially in UPPERCASE, is considered bad internet etiquette. You compound the problem by giving poor financial advice. If you were competent enough to give financial advice, you would not be in a position to have gone into an overdraft in this situation in the first place. The panel already had a facility in place to prevent you from being charged too much in one go, but you failed to take advantage of it. DreamHost made a mistake, but you made it worse with a combination of inaction and reaction.

Look, I am not one of those dumb enough to have given them automatic billing option, so I'm not directly affected by this, but it is clear they are hemorrhaging customers over this situation, and the longer they continue to screw up the refund situation, the more people are going to jump ship and the more people are going to attempt legal action. My concern, then, is starting to be whether Dreamhost is even going to stay in business and whether I (who was not directly affected) should go ahead and jump ship to another hosting company before they go under. I can't sit around and wait for that catastrophe to happen.

Re: Unexpected CC charge

Posted by: Mousee
Posted on: 2008-01-18 06:48:00

Uhmmm, anyone taking legal action against Dreamhost in this situation would clearly have no foundation from which to launch such a costly endeavor in the first place. DreamHost has already showed it's willing to refund the money - the time it takes to refund the money as per the customer's request is not enough to go to court over, so long as Dreamhost can prove it is actively working to refund said monies. So you'd clearly lose if you couldn't prove they were trying to hold your money for as long as possible (and for what reason I have no idea). Suing Dreamhost over something you yourself had enabled is also not something that could be upheld in court for very long. You're more than welcome to consult with a lawyer over the issue of course, but I'm quite positive Dreamhost would have to be *refusing* to refund said monies, along with evidence that they purposely billed customers with auto-pay set, to hold up in court.

And no, I don't see Dreamhost dying anytime soon - I can't imagine *that* many customers had auto-pay set to be enabled.

Mouse, I can clearly see that DH are losing many customers because of this so called accident. On top of that.. DH will need to pay the extra time for the people who are working hard to fix this (if they even are) and also pay back thousands of peoples' overdraft fees where DH will be losing a lot of money. This incident has hit blogs all over the internet and even in some headlines. DH's reputation is suffering big time from this.
There is also evidence of DH still charging people even after they claimed to process the refund. What does that tell you? Obviously, someone is not doing their job sufficiently.
DreamHost needs to stop promising solutions because not one has taken effect yet, nor is it helping their reputation.
I already removed my account and disputed this DreamHost charge. In order for me to do that, you are required to file a Fraud Report. I also know of about eight other people who was smart enough to do the same thing.
Dreamhost has a ton of weight on their shoulders right now and it will be a bumpy year for them. DreamHost's future does not look good.

I think you're listening to too many people crying wolf and not the facts - which none of us save those directly affected are aware of, and even those people know only what's happening to themselves, not others. So ranting, assuming, throwing out random accusations and ideas - just not going to help anyone but those who WANT to see DreamHost die.

Uhmmmm - and filing a Fraud Report is probably the funniest thing I've heard of yet. How are you going to prove they've "frauded" you when you clearly indicated that you wanted to AUTO-PAY Dreamhost?

I personally don't see anything wrong with DreamHost's future. I don't even use their services any longer and I pay for an account here. What does that tell you? Not a lot, just like what you're telling me. But have fun with your fraud report - I'm sure it'll be a blast wink

You are right, Tech; my colleague, who brought me over to Dreamhost, is one of the people affected. He still does not have his $400 back, and was willing to stick with dreamhost had he been refunded promptly. Now, after three days, he has had enough and is looking for a new host. And he has already filed a complaint with our state attorney general.

It does not take a genius to see that this may be a fiasco from which Dreamhost does not recover. I hope they do, but the signs are on the wall.

Mouse, you are obviously not one of the victims of Dreamhost's careless blunder.
You also had just said it yourself, "too many people crying", which is not doing DH any
good at all. Also, if you paid attention to my post, you would have noticed that I said
in order for a customer to dispute the charge, you are required to file a fraud report.
With banks advising customers to do such action, I can assure you that many reports are
being filed as we speak from worried customers.
Please enlighten me with some facts. The only facts I am seeing is broken promises from
DH, people gone mad, banks advising customers to dispute (which requires a fraud report incase
you mis-read again), customers leaving DH, customers filing reports, DH still charging
people three days after the claim of a complete refund process.

"Uhmmmm - and filing a Fraud Report is probably the funniest thing I've heard of yet. How are you going to prove they've "frauded" you when you clearly indicated that you wanted to AUTO-PAY Dreamhost?"

You are not that bright are you? I enabled the Auto-Pay service so they can accept my money when my agreement is up, not anytime they please, which breaks their own terms of service. I don't want to think of it as fraud myself since DH claimed to refund properly three days ago, but the fact that DH collected money three days after the successful refund gives me the right to worry and take action in my own hands and get it disputed and file the fraud report that IS REQUIRED to complete the dispute. In the end,.. you may not think it is fraud, but DH will be on the creditors' fraud list.

jbishop3, I am already changing my host to Lunarpages as we speak. They offer great service
that is reliable. I recommend this host to you and your colleague. They are laughing at DH
as we speak and even have some great offers at this time.

"<i>For all DH webmasters looking for an escape, Lunarpages has created a coupon code just for you! Use code DHRefugees to receive $40 off hosting with Lunarpages and we will also buy out the remainder of your contract with DreamHost! (Up to 9 months!) Tech,

My colleague has already decided to switch over to bluehost; I am going to give it a few weeks and see how things go for him over there before making a decision, but I may end up following him.

As far as the number of people affected by this: the financial number does come to $7.5 million, after all. That isn't a small number of people. A news article I read said the exact number of people affected was 600,000. They may have simply been quoting the total number of Dreamhost customers, but even if the autopay subscribers amounted to only a third of that (and it would probably have to be at least that, to justify the actual dollar amount), that still represents 200,000 people, most of which will probably find service elsewhere. And then there are those who weren't affected but will be leaving as a result of a loss in trust and confidence in Dreamhost. I am guessing, minimum, they are going to lose at least a third of the customers over this, probably more. And will that loss of revenue drag them under? Can a company suddenly afford to lose a third of its revenue? Time will tell.

Re: Unexpected CC charge

Posted by: techfanatic1978
Posted on: 2008-01-18 08:37:00

Well, those numbers definitely are not small. If and if ever DH gets this situated and takes care of all their poor customers ("poor customers"-ironc? lol), DH will have a hard time getting back on their feet. DH may even have to spend some extra money to improve their service in some way to get some customers back. If they don't get those customers back in a timely fashion, they will be losing that money. DH will be playing a gambling game for a while.

Can they make it back to their level before this had happened? I will not continue any service with DH in order to find out. I am only concerned that people get their refunds that DH promised.

There are a lot of careless people around here. There are the people who blame the customer for not having thousands in the bank, and becoming financially unstable from a $200 charge. Not everyone only got charged $200. Many people are up in the thousands. It sickens me. I referred a friend of mine who takes web developing courses and the only reason why he got an account here was because I got him $20 deal for one year. You just can't beat that! I felt terrible that he was charged for three more years when he was almost willing to maybe change to a lower plan. You can say he should have been smart to disable the Auto-Pay feature to prevent any un-authorized charges. But why would he have to if DH is an "Award Winning Service" and is to be trusted?

Re: Unexpected CC charge

Posted by: jbishop3
Posted on: 2008-01-18 08:50:00

In my opinion, Autopay is NEVER a good idea. Period. You forfeit control over your money to another person or entity. I would never use it in any situation. It doesn't matter if the company is trustworthy. As an old Persian proverb goes: "Trust in God, but tie your camel tight."

I, too, am disturbed by the lack of compassion that some posters have demonstrated for some of these customers who are operating on a fixed budget. Having a website is not a privilege only for the affluent or elite. A person with an average bank balance of $100 is just as entitled to have a presence on the web as any other. So the "let them eat cake" attitude disturbs me.

Another person suggested all press is good press. I have been happy with Dreamhost in the time I have been with them, but there is nothing "good" coming from this bad press. In fact, I wasn't aware of their frequent technical issues nor the security breach of last year until this current situation blew up and I found that stuff mentioned in posts, news articles, and the like.

I'd put the chances at:
0.05% Dreamhost goes under within the next year because of this
5% Dreamhost customer base shrinks over the next year
30% Dreamhost growth slows as a result of this
30% Dreamhost growth is not affected significantly
30% Dreamhost growth increases as a result of their name getting out there
4.5% uh. other?

I'm just making up these numbers, but really I wanted to opine that although the mistake is a very big deal and seriously affected a lot of people, I don't think it's "life threatening" for the company.

Union Carbide as a company survived the Bhopal disaster despite having been responsible for the deaths of upwards of 20,000 people. I'm not comparing this incident to that one (and I think it would be obscene to do so), but I am saying that hysterical worry about financial stability is not warranted.

Dude, they offer 15GB a month for almost twice the price that I pay for 13.55 TB. So, essentially, if I want to cut my bandwidth down to almost .1%, I'll get right on that.

Uhhh, bishop, did you just say that 600,000 people got over-billed for a total of 7.5 mil?

That's interesting. See, that would mean that the average person got over-billed $13.00, and considering I know that several people got billed for several hundred dollars, that means that a number of people would have had to have gotten over-billed by considerably less than that.

Methinks something does not add up.

Today: well, the hold's still gone, but oh, look at that: IT'S NOW AN ACTUAL CHARGE ON MY ACCOUNT!

What the hell, man?

Re: Unexpected CC charge

Posted by: jbishop3
Posted on: 2008-01-18 10:43:00

Yes, that appears to be correct.

The 600,000 number is indicated in this news article.

http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7009740797

I think that figure, and Josh's initial figure of 7.5 mil, probably indicated all the bills that were issued - not the ones that were drafted through autopay. Hopefully, that 2.1 mil just mentioned is the more accurate actual $ number, which would leave me a little more relieved about the situation. That would mean the majority of the customers did not get money taken out of their account.

Again, despite what some people would argue here, there is really NO WAY that the attention they get for this would translate into more people signing on with them. Bad press works for actors and rock stars, it does not work for companies soliciting your money, particularly when the bad press is about their mishandling of your money.

I just checked with my colleague, thegmmstr, and the same thing happend to him today: the hold has become an official charge to his debit account, despite Dreamhost's assurances to not contact his bank and the thing would disappear. So now he has officially contested it with his bank, which signifies the second thing that Dreamhost has disappointed him with (namely, telling him it would disappear and it didn't).

In fairness, I think it should be noted that Dreamhost could have shut these forums down at any time, following this incident. Leaving them up, and allowing the very negative grumblings about them to continue, does say something about their openness.

I'm not looking for them to fall apart, and I will probably stay with them if it looks that they are going to remain solvent. Overall, I have been pleased with my service. But I would have an entirely different perspective if I was one of the people who actually lost money because of this, and I'm smart enough to realize that.

In the end, do you think anyone's actually going to lose money because of this? I thought Dreamhost said they'd reimburse people for all fees due to this incident?

I do agree that there are some unfortunate folks who may have credit reporting issues because of this, but even those are *supposed* to be correctable given that the cause was a billing error.

There's no doubt that this has created a whole bunch of headache for a lot of people.

Have you ever tried to clear erroneous information off of a credit report? I doubt very much Dreamhost will be willing to reimburse people for the time they will have to spend if this causes problems on their credit reports. Then, for those who are running business web sites that have been disrupted by their fumblefingered screw-ups, there is no way Dreamhost can reimburse them. They have lost customer confidence and possibly customers over this. I have been a Dreamhost customer since 2004.
Unfortunately, Dreamhost has lost my trust. I will be taking my business to another company once I get my money back.

Re: Unexpected CC charge

People might get their money back, and they may get any penalties credited, but that will probably take weeks or months of back and forth with Dreamhost. In the end, it will cost people, regardless. Kind of like getting in a car accident through no fault of your own; even though the other guy's insurance pays the claim, you still find you are out something (lost work time, car is never the same, etc.). And if people's interest rate on their cards are jacked up because of this, and their credit ratings suffer (which will result in higher rates on loans, insurance, and the like) then this will be another case of the gift that keeps on giving. So there is no magic wand to make this all disappear; it will still leave a mark for some people. Mind you, that is worst-case-scenario thinking, but that may apply to some people.

Don't get me wrong, I think there are a number of people who have been significantly impacted by this. I also think that it's brought the peevish folks out of the woodwork. Not that any of the fine posters here on the forums should be described in those terms!

I have to admit that I'm pretty amused at the L*n*rpages offer. It's good to see such fine rivalry between business competitors - especially given the previous Dreamhost offers to those who wanted to flee L*n*rpages just a few short months ago! :)

More proof that you probably work for Lunarpages and are not a customer of DH at all, considering LP's history is just as bad. wink

Your other claims... like I said - discuss it with a lawyer. I know very well how the system works and filing a fraud claim against a company who, from what I can see, is trying to help customers get their money back is NOT fraud and will not get you anywhere but possibly further away from the money you are owed. Of course it takes someone "bright" to see this fact, but I won't stoop so low as to start name calling and such as you are now.

Have fun with your "Fraud" claims.

What pisses me off is that it is now day 4 of this mess and the only change I've seen is that what was a hold is now a full charge, and Monday is a bank holiday, which means that at the very, very earliest, I'm not going to see that money back until TUESDAY, almost a week later. If it's not back by Wednesday, I'm calling my bank. I'm kind of wondering if the refund script they wrote was set up to removed holds, or just refund actual charges.

Did anyone have a hold placed on their account that was removed before it became a charge?

It's a pretty complicated process, but Wikipedia has a decent article on the difference between authorization holds and settlement.

Given the situation you're describing, you must have visibility into the authorization holds on your account. The original erroneous charges involved a hold and a presentation for settlement - those appear "separately" in your account. The settlement/post is delayed from the authorization based on mysterious factors in the credit card / debit card settlement process. This settlement was inevitable from the time of the erroneous charge, as the charge was probably posted a fraction of a second after authorization was received. The refund will appear as a second transaction. I don't think refunds create an "authorization credit" and they also settle in wildly different timescales from debits (unfortunately for the consumer).

That is correct. You should definitely read the llatest blog post of the aftermath of the billing error. You should note from the post that:

In reply to:

If you were charged and haven’t seen the refund show up on your credit card / bank statement yet, try calling your bank. Lots of places take a day or two or three or even four to update their statements even if the money’s already back in, but they should see it (by tomorrow for sure) if you call them.

Unfortunately, it's now the weekend and many banks aren't available on weekends. If yours is, call and ask them.

Also note that their making good on any fees they cost you has gotten even better:

In reply to:

If this/these erroneous charge(s) by us resulted in you having any sort of overdraft/bounced check/nsf fee from your financial institution, please contact our support team from the web panel. We’d just like to request that you include a copy of your statement with the necessary info showing the fees. It can be either a paper statement or a print out of your online statement, or even a screenshot of your online statement and it can be scanned and attached to your support message via our support form or faxed to us at 714-990-2600. If you fax it, please be sure to write your domain name or DreamHost account number on the fax. When we get this, we will put money on your credit card equal to the amount your bank charged you, as well as give you a DreamHost account credit for the same amount on top of that.

Note that they're now double refunding you for any bank fees they cost you - once directly to your bank account and once to your Dreamhost account.

Also note that if decide you and Dreamhost need to part ways:

In reply to:

Another thing… if you’ve decided because of this fiasco you’d like to cancel hosting with us, we will allow you to get a full credit card refund of any unused portion of your pre-paid contract, even if you’re past our standard 97 day money-back guarantee.

They also explain the extra safeguards they've added to their automated systems as a result of this billing error.

I don't blame the people who leave because of this incident, but I'm staying. Every business makes mistakes, but not every business owns up to their mistake and tries this hard to make sure that those who've suffered from their mistake are made whole. Again, many of you may consider this incident tantamount to being an "unforgivable curse", but the one silver lining in this dark cloud is that my trust in their ethics has gone up at the same time that my trust in their typing has gone down.

Omg, I just want to cry at all this foo. This has caused two of my transactions to bounce, and every day my account is overdrafted (which is up to four now), I am being charged an overdraft fee for each day. I don't know why the heck it's not taking sooner to reverse these charges. I've seen them done on the same day before. I wasn't thinking of changing my hosting service, but as my account keeps spiraling more and more into the red it is just infuriating me. And it seems everyone is STILL waiting for some kind of reversal to occur. I wanna puke.

I'm definitely staying, DH can't be beat 99.9% of the time. But that .1% is momentarily killing me. It certainly doesn't help matters that Monday is a bank holiday.

Yup, sadly, while the $240 charge would normally not be a big deal for me, I'm currently between jobs, and unemployment hasn't kicked in, so money is really really tight.

Thanks to the pending charge actually posting, I'm now in the red, and got slapped with a $35 overdraft fee. According to my bank, the money is supposedly waiting in Visa's hands to be posted to my account...Tuesday. This is unacceptable to me, and I have been trying repeatedly to get Dreamhost to respond to my emails since last Tuesday and they have not. The only email communication from them has been the emails sent out to all affected customers. Nothing relating to the specific issues I want them to address.

I attempted to contact the billing # listed in their Whois lookup, but like a brief Google search had told me to expect, they don't answer (or apparently return phone calls).

As per the information in this Dreamhost blog post that I posted a little earlier in this thread, Dreamhost will refund you double any overdraft fees and bounced check fees. Once to you as a credit through your default payment method and once through a credit in your Dreamhost account.

Maybe this is at least slightly more "acceptable"? If not, I do feel badly for you in your difficult situation, but I'm not sure what you were hoping for, given the initial terrible mistake.

I have, in fact, read the blog posts explaining all of that. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that I will be overdrawn and unable to access what limited funds I had before this "mistake" until Tuesday. That is what I want fixed.

What gets me is that I pay my DH acccount with my paypal DEBIT card. And since I didn't have 363.13 in my paypal account, paypal used my backup funding which is my paypal CREDIT card. now I spoke with paypal yesterday and they said Dreamhost hasn't contacted them at all with any credit back to my debit card. and now today i look at my paypal credit card and the charge has went through. meaning DH got the money. but here it is the 19th and I still have yet to get the credit back. BUT DH has charged me again for the normal monthly charge. now I know for a fact that if I make a purchase with paypal. such as shipping with UPS, and then I cancel it. the money doesn't get taken out of my account. So if DH would have canceld the charge then it would have never been taken out either. But yet on the 17th it has cleared meaning DH got the 363.13, and has not yet contacted paypal OR made a credit back to my PP debit card.

Now for all of you saying that you will stay with DH. Good Luck!

My bank(M&T) said that if there's an overdraft, dreamhost may have to fax them something then I'm in the clear. What are my chances of an actual fax getting sent out by DH? lol

Considering they offered to pay overdrafts, don't you think they'd rather send a fax than pay it, if it can be resolved that way?

Are you saying that you've canceled an order that's already been charged to your credit card and have had the charge not appear? Or are you saying that you've canceled an order before it's been charged and the charge has been seemingly canceled even though an authorization hold has been placed on your account? It's my understanding that most vendors don't actually charge your card until shipment actually occurs. It's easy for a vendor to cancel a "charge" that hasn't been submitted, the vendor just doesn't submit it. It's also my understanding that once a vendor has submitted a charge, that they can't cancel it, but must instead issue a refund.

Again, it's my understanding that it all depends on whether the charge has actually been submitted to PayPal or whether the merchant holds the payment until the transaction is definitely going to go forward. The most common example is merchants who don't actually charge your card until the item has shipped. Another example, I'd guess, is shipping with UPS, where they'd likely authorization hold your account when you order for a pickup and print the label but then issue the actual charge when they pick your package up, right?

Anyway, sorry to hear of your unfortunate situation. I know it doesn't make it any easier for you to hear that a lot of the problems were inevitable once the original mistake was made. Anyway, best wishes in your new (hosting) home.

More proof that you probably work for Lunarpages and are not a customer of DH at all, considering LP's history is just as bad.

Well, he's either a Lunarpages lowlife, or too stupid to work a search engine. A real winner, either way.

Check out what an ex-employee has to say about the slimy deception that goes on around the clock at Lunarpages: http://spacytracie.com/dreamhost-and-lunarpages/391/

Anyone that thinks their credit/debit card numbers are safer with degenerates like that might just be an idiot. Switching to Lunarpages after this would be like saying, I don't trust Dreamhost with my billing info anymore, so I'm going to give my credit cards to that guy with the ski-mask & gun in the dark alley instead. tongue

How? It was Saturday when you posted this, and Monday is a bank Holiday. Do you want Dreamhost to look up the head of your bank and demand they open up specially so that you can get your money? A lot of us are in similar boats, but really, there's nothing they can do to get money into your bank if your bank's not open.

I am going on 3 years with DH so I knew I could trust them to fix the problem quickly. I was so confident that they would help me that I also stood up for DH when so many were trying to diss them on Digg.

Friday the 18th I still saw no refund. I sent them an email stating I see no refund and less than an hour later I the refund was on my account. Ok.... I guess they issued the refund at that time.

I also sent them a text copy of my online bank so they could see the overdraft fee it caused, but they Never responded to my support email!. I sent the email to support@dreamhost.com the exact address that sent me the "accidental billing" email.

I finally read today that I need to log into the web panel and submit a screenshot of my bank. It would have been nice for them to reply to my "support" email telling me this. This has caused quite a controversy and I have spent a fair amount of my own time dealing with this.

All in all there is no question in my mind that DH will pay or remove the OD fee after all they do their job, and they do their job well. It doesn't change the fact that I had to ask my parents for money and run to the bank late at night to deposit a check when my bank acct went red. Oh well.

If the funds appeared in your account on the 18th, they were probably credited by Dreamhost on the 16th or 17th. Funds don't just appear instantaneously in bank accounts except through the wire transfer system.

Too right.

All banks drag their feet. The minimum turn-around you could expect from most bank to bank transactions is 3 days, most are longer. The majority treat these types of transactions like cheques and hold your funds in a "clearing house" - which is bankspeek for "we placed your money on the short-term market for awhile". The banking institutions turn over trillions in interest each year doing this.

If you emailed and received payment 1 hour later it was coincidence.

Well that, or the support guy raced down to your local branch and deposited the money, in ca$h, directly into your account.
