How to disable GZip encoding on per-directory

Hi!
I'd like to disable mod_gzip on a per-directory basis. So far, the following .htaccess tricks don't work:

mod_gzip_on no
mod_gzip_item_exclude file "somefile.php"

I need to disable gzip encoding, because the returns from the php file are parsed by a javascript and I don't know of any way of inflating gzipped data in javascript.

How can I do this? Someone on dreamhosters forum suggested to create a subdomain and ask the staff to disable mod_gzip on that domain. It's a little overkill for my purpose, but if necessary, i'll have to take that option.

But is there any other effective way to disable on-the-fly compression on a directory?

Regards.
