Can't access pages by http

I just uploaded files to my web site via ftp (Konqueror) and I'm getting errors when I try to access them via http in my browser.

I've checked permissions, as I've stuffed them up on occasion.

Weird thing is, I changed the browser request to ftp and, after entering login details, retrieved without problem. Changed back to http - no go.

There's no .htacess in the main domain root directory, where these files are. I have WP and Gallery in subdomains. There are some remnants of a previous WP installation (can't remember but think it may have been in the main domain). Wondering if any of these could be causing the problem.

What errors are you receiving?

Very little to do with either emus or farmers!

Not Found

The requested URL /index.html was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I did upload 404.html, but if index.html isn't found I would expect the same for the error document.

Memory's not helping me much, but I think when I've set up error pages before, I had to put something in .htaccess to make the server find them. As I said, there's no .htacess in this root directory, so maybe that's another clue. But then on reflection maybe it's an apache file (httpdconf is it?) that does that?

Sorry to anyone whose time I may have wasted on this ...

At last figured it out. Used WebFTP to see if it would reveal anything and immediately realised that my domain's root directory isn't my account's root directory. I had put the files in the account root directory, i.e.

/home/mydomain.com instead of
/home/mydomain.com/mydomain.com

I hadn't noticed this subtlety before as I've only been using the subdomains, for which ftp doesn't create this ambiguity.

so your username is the same as the domain of your site?

No, when I log in to ftp mydomain.com, I'm actually in the account's root folder, but my ftp client displays the address ftp://mydomain.com. When I move to the correct directory it displays ftp://mydomain.com://mydomain.com

Don't know if that's a slight bug in Konqueror or if it's standard with other ftp clients. (Maybe a quirk in Konqueror, which does file management, web browser, ftp, and other things all in the one interface.)

okay, i guess it was the /home/ that threw me -- on the linux side the directory is /home/username/domain.com/

Ah! that was just me still getting confused. I threw the home bit in wrongly.
