Crontab

Hi I'm looking for help on how to use Dreamhosts crontab... I can seem to get it working from a shell interface... could someone help me please... I'm just looking more or less for a quick step by step guide to how to do it

(the things a crontab entry needs is when (month/day/date/dayofweek/time/hours/minutes) and the program you want to run.)
