Good, according to Dreamhost's recommendation, you're always supposed to use the hostname and not your IP address to connect to your server. Your IP address may change from time to time, but your hostname will stay the same unless you change it yourself.
Also, thanks for the tip, I didn't know this was possible under Linux, but this is going to be an enormous asset for me.
For anyone interested, there is a Windows utility that does pretty much the same thing called WebDrive, if you don't have Linux installed. It's not free software, but there is a free alternative released by Novell, called NetDrive, which I found to be highly unstable on pretty much every system I tried it on, so stay away!
