DNS PTR help

I need to setup a PTR record for my mail server. I manage my external DNS through Dreamhost and when I try to put in a record and an IP address it spits back that .xxx is not a valid suffix. I checked with my ISP and they dont enter PTR records there... I'm a little confused. Any help would be appreciated!!

PTR records do not go in your domain's zone file. The owner of the IP block (or the person they have delegated authority to) needs to set this up. If you're talking about a static IP address from your ISP, you'll have to ask them to do it for you. Some ISPs will, some won't.
