Creating a subdomain to replace the www bit.

Hi.

I hope all you clever DH people can help! (I'm new from CarolHost and used to the CPanel way of doing things!)...

On my old domain pointed to my website. Lets call it mydomain.com. So if anyone typed in http://www.mydomain.com or http://mydomain.com it went to my homepage and they could browse my site.

I also had another "site" (gallery of my photography) located at the URL subdomain http://photo.mydomain.com . And another on my car collection at http://cars.mydomain.com . This was really nice as it tied in quite perfectly with my URL.

How do I set something like this up in the DH panel? Can it even be done?

Luckily, this is the default behavior for all new domains or sub-domains added to the DreamHost system.

This is easily achieved at DreamHost you just need to add the sub-domains via the panel. Go to Domains -> Manage Domains, click on Add New Domain / Sub-Domain, fill in the relevant details in the Fully Hosted section then click the Fully host this domain now! button. Note: you need to enter the full sub-domain (eg: subdomain.mydomain.com) in the Domain to host: field.

I should note that the DreamHost way of handling sub-domains is somewhat different to the cPanel way. At DreamHost sub-domains are treated just like regular domains and a new web accessible directory is created in your home directory for each sub-domain, just like regular domains. These directories will, by default, have the same name as the sub-domain.

I figured that the first part with the www. etc. Superb! :)

So I simply "add" a whole new domain, but instead of putting www in the registration box, I would put photo or cars?

So the settings in the pic below is the right way to do it? The three radio button options where I can choose www. etc confuse me. Which option should I go for?

I only want http://photo.mydomain.com to work.

Yes, those settings will work, but you might want to leave the Web Directory field set to 'photo.mydomain.com' instead of just 'photo'. The reason I suggest this is because a new directory will be created in your home directory (not the mydomain.com directory) and having it named 'photo.mydomain.com' will make it easier to find later if you have lots of sub-domains for various domains.

Sorry, I missed this question.

Since you only require http://photo.mydomain.com, I would suggest choosing the Remove "www." radio button. www.photo.mydomain.com will still work, but the www. part will be stripped from the URL in the users browser.

Thats the part which confused me!

As for the previous post - I'm not going to be hosting a tonne of sites with many folders... and only I'll access the site. So will be lazy and just use photo! Dunno why, but always did it that way!

hehe, use whatever you find simpler

I know if I did it that way I would be forever wondering which sub-domain belonged to which domain.

I should also point out that it can take a little while for the sub-domain to become 'resolvable' after it has been added, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. During this time you can still upload content to the sub-domains directory, you just won't be able to access it via a browser.

Will actually name it mydomain.photo for example (I have the folders without .com etc on them).
