Can't connect to new domain

I just signed up for DreamHost about 3 hours ago.
I've searched the forum and I realize that when I new domain is created it takes time to propogate across the internet's dns servers but my domain is only a subdomain of a dreamhost domain. ie. http://www.mydomain.dreamhosters.com/
In that case shouldn't it be instantly available? I mean since the dns's already know where dreamhosters.com is.
I uploaded a simple index.html file to my servers domain folder but when I try to visit my page I get nothing. What is strange however is that when I visit webmail.mydomain.dreamhosts.com my webmail works. I would think if it can find that it should be able to find my website as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You might think that, but it doesn't seem to work that way, probably because the various subdomains of dreamhosters.com can be on different servers, with different IPs. My experience was they "spread" quicker than a new domain, but still took a little while (minutes to hours).

I think you got it but just to be clear my domain isn't actually "mydomain" lol
