local imagemagick install

i'm trying to get my local install of imagemagick working but i can't properly set the environment variable (LD_LIBRARY_PATH) for apache so it knows where to find the library's. but if i set it in the .httaccess, it won't stick, and if i set in in my ruby code (i'm running rails) its too late. I've tried a wrapper script, but then other crap screws up. Has anyone done this successfully? or have any ideas?
