DNS and local FTP server?

DNS and local FTP server?

I would like to set up my home computer as an FTP server, but use a subdomain to point there.

I realize that I can set up a new DNS record and point at my home machine.

My issue will be if my IP address changes. When I was using ZoneEdit, I had a client that would check for an update and notify ZoneEdit of the change. Is there anyway to do that with DH?

Nope. DNS here has to be updated manually.

Shoot. Well, let's hope my IP doesn't change that often.

Thanks

I do the same - via dyndns.org, where I have set up a dynamic dns account, which can be updated by my router (I think it is possible via the computer as well). I then make a cname from ftp.home.mydomain.com to mysub.dyndns.org (or whatever domain your choose with their service) - and voila. :)

Aha...that's a very clever way to do it!

Thanks.

So I can't use ZoneEdit, as they don't provide a name to me, just the ability to change the IP. So I either need to find the domain of my computer or sign up at dyndns.org.

Thanks

or u use one of your subdomains here on DH and point to zoneedit nameservers.
or even better:
point your ALL domain to zoneedit nameservers, and then just place A records to DH.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I found a reasonably clean solution. I wanted to keep my DNS control at DH as it is way better than ZoneEdit's. I ended up finding out my external hostname via traceroute. Then I just plugged that into a CNAME record at DH.

I will assume that my internet provider will keep that host name (like 1234dr5678f.vw.shaw.net) current with my dynamic IP address. Therefore I don't have to update anything as Shaw will do it for me. The key for me was learning about CNAME records instead of A records.

DNS hostnames are tied to IP addresses, not users, so when your IP address changes your DNS name will too.

The only way to do what you want is to use a dynamic DNS service (eg, DynDNS or similar) and point your CNAME to the hostname they provide.

I dont how your ISP works, because mine, even that hostname you talk about is dinamic, and generate based on dinamic IP
