I'm unable to ftp anything to my dreamhost server as the connection is always closed by the remote server.

ftp> put apps.zip
200 PORT command successful
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for apps.zip
ftp: netout: Software caused connection abort
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

Any ideas?

You might want to try using passive FTP. It's a checkbox in most programs' settings.
