mysql dumps and downtime

so, my site is still down and i'm thinking of moving one of my sites to another host. with this in mind i decided to dump my database over ssh -- since i can't get to phpmyadmin either. it starts the process but then kills it before it can complete. is anyone else experiencing this? is this related to the current troubles?
