Anyone else notice sites going down?

None of the sites I have hosted on whittier.dreamhost are working.

Also, I can't get dreamhoststatus.com to pull up either.

Anyone know of any scheduled outtages that might be causing this?

Yeah, hard to get a status report when the status report page is down...

One of my sites is up and running "normally", but I did have an error once about my SQL not exsisting. Another wouldn't load at all. "index.php" not found...but it has since come back.

Oh the joy.

The status page is the only thing that doesn't load for me -- but that's not hosted here, so I doubt that's linked to any other problems.

Status is down here too.

My sites are up, however. They are a bit slow.

I'm starting to think DH should scrap the whole status site for one that just tells us when services are running normally. It would be MUCH less work for them since they wouldn't have had to do anything for the past month or so.

Likewise, I can't get to www.dreamhoststatus.com and my site is either unusably slow or not responding. My site was that way for the last 3 days with the exception of last evening.

I thought the status page was hosted elsewhere, to let DH customers check the status even during a major outage. If it's hosted at DH, that makes it a lot less useful..

It's been several days that I experience several complete downtimes.

Today, my site is down like every 10 minutes, including FTP.

So every 10 minutes i'm disconnected from FTP breaking my file upload.

I'm always suprised about how much RAGE I can feel when troubles like this happen with my hosting provider.

I've been with them for nine years, but they don't care about turnover. Their goal (judging by their posts on their blog) is to have a lot of customers. Rather than taking a quality first method to achieving that, they're just packing everyone in as fast as they can.

Meanwhile they are shorting their long-time customers but I guess that makes sense. Many of us now get greatly discounted/free/get paid to host ad DH because of all the customers we've referred. If they get the old guys to leave, they wont have to pay out anymore.

Unfortunately, the tactic they're using has always been proven to be detrimental for the long term. There's a ton of names for it, none of which have a good connotation.

Alas, they still seem to be trying, at least. Michael is often very helpful so I still stick around. They don't have to post in this forum, they don't even have to say they're trying, but they do. Maybe I'm becoming a victim of PR.

My site isn't down, but it does have its unusually slow moments. I suspect it's network related, though... it looks like the server I'm on, Scipio, is getting hit fairly hard. Or has a lot of IO requests queued up.

The Dreamhost Panel's contact support page has a message saying that the server hosting dreamhoststatus.com has failed and since it isn't at their primary center, it will take them a while to fix.

Seems like they need additional redundancy somewhere.

dreamhoststatus.com is apparently down too. I can ping it, but not pull it up. But being hosted elsewhere there's always the possiblity it can go down for whatever reason on it's own.

LOL! Let's see, it costs maybe $2k to setup two machines that are mirrored. One can build a server that basically has redundant everything...

I guess their status server gets hammered so much that the hardware decided to give up ;)

I currently host two of my websites on lunarpages.com. For the same price i'm paying on dreamhost, I get the same features there, without my site being down all the time.

I'm currently switching one of my sites from dreamhost over to lunarpages.

I suggest others do the same. Why should we be paying for this shitty service when, for the same price, we can have a much more reliable and flexible host.

Heh. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one getting a dismissive tone from the infrequent communications. One response actually tried to pretend that Dreamhost didn't host my site (they host the site, but not the DNS name). Then, in the same email, I was told to run a treaceroute as if there were some problem on my end (which showed 20% packet loss on Dreamhosts' hop). I'm sure it's just a coincidence that we're all having problems at the exact same time, huh?

Funny, I never come here because I usually just go directly to customer support with questions/issues. But as I am reading over these posts, I am reminded that these "issues" 1. have been going on ALL summer.. and 2. "are being worked on".. This really needs to stop. I've been with them for over 4 years and it's going down hill all around fast.
I can't even get into any of my sites today.. The web panel NEVER works with Foxfire and runs like a snail in EI.. I get a response from customer service:

"Sorry about the issues with your site. We are obviously going though
major network issues at the moment. This is the reason for a lot of the
slowness/downtime you might have seen us post about on dreamhoststaus.com
over the course of the last month or so. We are rebuilding and replacing
hardware to fix it, whatever we need to do to get you, and US, up and
running at full speed again. The experts at Cisco (the people who's
hardware we use) are confident that our scheduled network overhaul on
Monday will solve most of not all of these problems.

Usually it's just a really slow issue and you will be able to access the
site if you continue to try. I know that doesn't help much if you need
something NOW, but just wanted you to know. The problem also comes and
goes with how busy the server is and blah blah blah.

Come Tuesday, things should be MUCH better. Very sorry!"

So--- 1. I have to wait til Tuesday?????!!!! 2. "Most" of the problems will be solved???? Not acceptable.

As far as I'm concerned, they should do their maintenance, upgrade, whatever it is (because they haven't really told us what the problems are, or what the solution entails) NOW.

Maybe if enough of us demand it, they might do it (unless of course they are waiting for some piece of equipment).

Would be nice to have real information (not just "Network issue") so we can better understand how deep the situation is.

Really disapointed by these latest developments.

Nice idea, but I'm suspecting :

1) Waiting for equipment
2) Waiting for Cisco/Other Vendor "onsite" assistance
3) "Honcho" sysadmin not available *NOW*

or any/all of the above, in any order...I can't fathom them waiting until Monday if they had *any* ability to address it *NOW*; I can only assume that they do not have that ability, which is *really* disturbing (they ought to be rolling in money to throw at this stuff given their recent growth!)

If they are doing the upgrades Monday and they STILL don't have the equipment or everything required? Then they have more problems than just network.

You should ALWAYS have the equipment before hand do you can verify that it's even the right equipment and that it'll even turn on; let alone OS updates, etc.

When I worked as a Sys admin we always got the equipment a good 2-3 weeks before we'd even schedule the network upgrades. The scheduling is done when we know everything's in line and ready to go live.

Why are they still having problems with the status page? I thought that was hosted somewhere complete different on a completely different network. Is THAT networking having problems, too? They should be hosting the status page on a major blog like Wordpress or Blogger.

2 sites down. 2 databases not connecting. No control panel. No support (because there's no CP). No mail.

Absolutely terrible service. And worse, I've only been using DH since May but I've almost come to expect at least one service to be down when I need to administer my sites.

My 97 days have passed so no refund, but unless there are some significant improvements in service I'll be switching long before my contract is up and recommending other sites to clients and friends.

Re: Anyone else notice sites going down?

Posted on: 2006-09-08 19:17:00

Good points, all! I really shouldn't be just "guessing", because I dodn't know any more about what is actually happening than any other customer.

It just makes me think they are "waiting" on something/someone, given the initial announcement of Sunday night downtime (which makes a little better sense, given traditional traffic loads and all), and now "significant" upgrade/repair/maintenance on Monday night (after another, "beginning of the week business day" of troubles).

I've got to believe they would avoid that if they could, so something be lacking, and waiting for the Monday business day to be "ready". My guess is hardware or people, but I really don't know.

Well, normally I'd be with you but they've been having these problems for over a month.

1) Does it really take a month to get equipment? I've put together an entire network with 450 machines, having to get all the equipment, in a matter of days.
2) The vendors typically provide onsite assistance in under a week. They've had five.
3) If the "honcho" or sysadmin can't find a day in a month to work on an extremely bad problem, that person needs to be replaced.

Finding info on good hosts is hard - it seems like no one is consistently good or bad. I've gotten mixed info on just about every host I've researched. Right now I'm down to bluehost and godaddy. Anyone looking at other alternatives?

Slightly different with Linux. It can run find upto 2-3, but over that you generally get noticeable slowdown.

Now the issues you're seeing are most likely contributed to IO errors with the NIC cards unable to send queued data, etc. Of course, with permissions locked down as they are, we're unable to see that.

Anyway, the bottom line, the load's not going to get any better on the servers until the network is fixed.

No kidding! Put us on discussion.dreamhost.com!

I agree, I've been with DH for almost 4 years, and have had honestly amazing service until these last 3-6 months. Are we seriously looking at a potential weekend of virtually non-accessible servers? Can we get our September pro-rated to account for this?

While network problems can certainly happen, the common sentiment shared on these forums seems to be that DH isn't taking the appropriate prevention measures to help reduce this in the first place. If server loads are over capacity, machines outdated or in poor repair, and bandwidth unreliable, something pretty drastic needs to be done, imho.

At least they got their better business bureau rating from F to C... is this to strive for?

rlparker-- I hear you :)..
I am *not* in the least bit tech-knowledgable, but I do work in a tech industry (customer service no less).. I know things go wrong, break and customers get P.O.ed.. It's always been my job to offer solutions, options, explainations and of course apoligies.
Maybe because of my Cust Service background, I am more demanding of good Service, but I am also a lot more patient with out-of-control issues. But IMO, they are being horrid. They are NOT providing answers, reasonable solutions or options.. and frankly their apoligies feel less than sincere.

We shouldn't be the ones guessing or suggesting the issues or solutions.. they should (and it should be something more reasonable than "by tuesday things *should* be better)! I can't beleive some one from DH hasnt come on these working forums and posted something.

Josie,

In reply to:

My feelings exactly. A lot of people's weekends are going to be stressful enough because of these problems, and not communicating well on the part of DH needlessly increases that stress.

It would be a lot easier to resign ourselves (in the short term) to the reality of what is happening if we understood it better.

To this end I posted a new thread in the "General Troubleshooting" forum encouraging Dallas/Josh to make an appearance; I think that, whether or not the news is good, the communication would be encouraging and make it easier for *me* to get through the weekend.

rlparker- I saw your new post for Dallas/Josh right after I posted... and I've officially decided that you rock!

Thanks for doing that.. it is truly what was needed. All our speculation and questions are just turning into a venting session.. Thanks again for taking the time to request info.

(edit) Ok.. I am trying to refrain from starting a new post and adding to the madness but I have to say this.. GRRRRRRR.. WHile we sit and grind our teeth, count the money we are losing, etc etc.. Josh does have time to post an amusing quip on the blog-site which is working, unlike our sites. Regradless of his actual job at DH- it irks me to think My Cash went into him being able to access his area while I cant access mine.

Sorry folks. Every time there is a problem everyone starts to whine and blame and in general downtalk the host. I for one am happy with Dreamhost. I came here from 1and1 as a host, my websites have been down ONCE in the almost year that I have been here. Even now my sites are all up and running, although I cannot access the control panel. This will be solved. Keep working on it guys, and thanks for the best hosting experience I have had since I hosted my own site on this box :)

-HAPPY Dreamhost customer.

P.S. Putting the support page somewhere else would lead to TONS and floods of reports and so forth over a problem they already know about, costing them more time in fixing the actual glitch. dreamhoststatus.com is up, try looking at it.

Sorry to cross post this, but I'm still within my 97 days, and kind of anxious at this point. Was wondering if anyone had heard anything, good or bad, about ZOOM. (zoomhosting.com) ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That's like a stab in the face to everyone who has their site down right now.

throwing salt into the wound and then rubbing it with a burning branch if you ask me.

When I first signed up with dreamhost things were awful. That was 6 months ago. They assured me that this wasn't the 'usual' problems and things would run smoother soon. I should've seen it as a red flag when the very first weekend I had the new host it was down for a day. It's been down more times than I can count and I"ve had more problems with my email than I'd like to remember. I'll be switching soon. After researching I see that these problems have been happening for more than the last 6 months and are not isolated incidents. Instead of trying to be the one with the most customers dreamhost really should try to have the best quality service with the customers they have... just a thought.

Thankfully, I just received word from someone in support, who apologized for the downtime, and asked that I hold off (if I'm willing) jumping from the site, and asking for my refund until the core router is updated on Sunday. So, I think I'll give them a week more to see if this really was just a stroke of bad luck to have been slammed with this sort of down time right out of the gate.

Everyone please take a look at the alternative hosts thread... we need to let dreamhost know we're serious this time.

The host I most recommend is ivhosting.com

They've got a killer deal... $99/year for unlimited domains.

The only reason I got this account was I felt like I was about to outgrow my account there. I still have my account and many domains there.... I wanted to give dreamhost a test to see if it was worth moving all of my domains there.

The verdict? Uh... I think I'll move back, thank you!

As for the zoomhost place... I have no idea..

I emailed through the billing address that was at the bottom of my initial billing confirmation a week ago, because I couldn't get through the support panel, either. That's actually one of the MAJOR turnoffs of DH for me so far, and I don't even know if sustained uptime for a week can help me get over it. The fact that an email to support@dreamhost.com bounced back and told me to go through the web panel is irritating enough, but it's down right infuriating when you can't even access the page because of massive downtime.

If you check back through the status logs, you'll see DH has had more than one outage that dropped all services within the past year. So all you're saying with that comment is you don't pay close enough attention to your sites to have an accurate perspective.

There is truth in it though.

People mostly dream at night... When they are asleep.

In this case, our visitors (along with outselves) will be falling asleep due to the servers being so slow...

I applaud you happy campers that are calling us whiners and posting why you love DH.. but I am specifically noticing comments from you happy peeps that your sites Arent down! It truly irks me that you would come in and say.. I love DH, my sites arent down.
Yippy Skippy that my web panel is up.. however, my business is run from my site, not my web panel.

Correction. Aren't down *now*. Which means they *are* at least trying to fix things. Sorry your website wasn't the first to come back online. Really, I am.

In reply to:

It truly irks me that you would come in and say.. I love DH, my sites arent down.

You show me where it is I even implied that, then we'll talk. My opinion of DH has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact my site is back online. What it *has* to do with, however, is yesterday/today's downtime being the *first* and, so far, *only* time my site has been down. That's it, that's all. I'm not saying your situation's any better or worse than mine. What I'm saying, in not as few words, is that *my* experience with DH has, thus far, been a positive one, minus yesterday's/today's downtime. I really wish people would put as much effort into reading things as they do trying to criticise them.

Yes, I have an opinion.

Hey Quanin- Total apology for implying that it was you I was refering too (I know I hit the reply to you button). When I went off on the rant there I was actually thinking of some previous posts on this thread and others...

I may have deserved that based on how my post read out but in my defense I'm simply at my wits end here with the DH situation of present.

I do have to say, there's a lot of accusations on that site. It sounds more like a dude ranting off. He/they obviously don't have the technical understanding to follow throw with some of their ranting. I have always stated Dreamhost is more targeted towards the technical savvy folks. You know, people that actually know that phpBB is a resource hog and know how to troubleshoot and minimize the resources the forums takes -- I've been running a phpBB forum on my site for over a year and never once did I hear a peep from DH about hogging resources.

Wow, even that BBB is misleading. They have "they are not in compliance with the law's licensing or registration requirements." but when you goto their site, it clearly states: We know of no licensing or registration requirement for companies engaged in this company's stated type of business.

You'd think the BBB would get their own story straight.
