Using custom compiled PHP

I couldn't figure out a way to do simple math with large binary numbers in vanilla PHP, so I checked out a library called 'gmp'. I followed the instructions on the wiki and made PHP with gmp included, and from what I can tell everything worked fine. Problem is, I don't think my site is using this custom copy of PHP. It's saying any gmp_ function is undefined. How would I enable it?

I also need to know how to add and enable GMP with PHP. I want to use the OpenID plugin for WordPress, and it cannot function without GMP. Anyone willing to wield some PHP magic? :)
