Mail Down?

I can get to my site ok, but I wasn't able to access my email the last three times I tried. I also couldn't access it last night at one point, but I signed up for the Outage Updates, and that said everything was fine on first check. (Everything but FTP had been down for a bit yesterday.)
I just sent a message yesterday to friends on MySpace that they could submit content for my site, and gave them an URL for submission guidelines, but I require that my email be working! This could hurt my site visitations. Does anyone have any news?
I did just check DreamHostStatus.com, and I see there have been more DOS attacks. Isn't there any way these can be prevented?
