viewing index?

hey all,

excuse this newbie while he asks something stupid....

I registered a domain and now when I visit the URL I end up at a page saying "index of /" and you can view all the files and web pages I want the world to see.

How do I get to where when someone enters my URL they get the main web page I created and not my index of files?
How do I keep that index secret from prying eyes?

thanks!

Create a file named index.html, or any one of the names given in the list in the following wiki article:

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/KB_/_Sign_Up_/_Infrastructure_/_Software_/_Apache

This file will be used when accessing the URL of the directory that contains it. E.g. /home/myuser/mydomain.com/index.html will be used when the user requests http://mydomain.com.

Have a look in the wiki:

Edit: 3rd search result for index.
