Announce list verification URL problem

I am trying to set up an announcement list and populate with names from a hand written list. I use the DH form which requires:

To verify your subscription to this list, please visit this URL now:

(--url--)

But when the person clicks thru the email to URL for verification, they get a Form Submission Error:
Unable to verify for subscription to this list.
This may be because you have already subscribed, or because the URL you used is malformed.
Please try to subscribe again.

I have been testing with an address that is not already subscribed to the list.

Got any suggestions for what's going on?

Don't put --url-- in parathesis. The trailing ) would cause the URL to be malformed.
