This may seem like a noob question, but keep in mind that I dont have an account with dreamhost, I'm just trying to help out my friend with his site (who is using dh).

We are trying to set up a few php/mysql pages to log activity and need to know what mysql_connect() should use for the hostname....

You actually set up the hostname as a cname of the domain. For example, you could use db.yourdomain.com or mysql.yourdomain.com. That's done when you create the database in the control panel under Goodies > MySQL.
