Site/Downloads Slow

Site/Downloads Slow

Is anyone else having problems with slow downloads from their site at the moment? No one can get speeds higher than 20kbps from my site, including me.

I'm fairly new to DreamHost and web hosting in general, so I'm wondering if it's a problem at the DreamHost end or if I may need to change a setting somewhere?

Nope, can you post a traceroute?

Well, this is where my ignorance will show. I found out how to run a trace route and did, but I'm not sure how to read the results. This is what I got.

1 20 ms 3 ms 4 ms 192.168.0.1
2 41 ms 18 ms 20 ms ri-pow-ibo-tit-1-loo-20.tpgi.com.au [202.7.162.162]
3 37 ms 18 ms 20 ms bri-pow-ibo-cup-1.tpgi.com.au [203.213.7.208]
4 31 ms 19 ms 19 ms bri-pow-ibo-zeu-1-ge-2-1.tpgi.com.au [203.213.7.193]
5 50 ms 33 ms 33 ms vlan317.14vrc76f06.optus.net.au [203.202.148.241]
6 207 ms 201 ms 208 ms 203.208.148.77
7 195 ms 206 ms 201 ms 203.208.168.122
8 225 ms 205 ms 216 ms so4-2-0-622M.ar2.PAO2.gblx.net [208.50.13.185]
9 213 ms 209 ms 211 ms so1-0-0-622M.ar1.LAX3.gblx.net [67.17.73.42]
10 218 ms 220 ms 220 ms 67.17.162.162
11 227 ms 199 ms 216 ms basic-jolly.slauson.dreamhost.com [64.111.125.178]

Does the increase in ms between points 5 and 6 indicate a problem? Apologies for being so clueless.

No, the increase is due to that particular hop being across the Pacific Ocean. :)

A ping latency of around 190-200ms is normal for the trip from Australia to the west coast of the USA.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks.

Though that still leaves me with ridiculously slow download speeds. Hopefully support will be able to sort it out.

If you want to rule out a problem with the server you could try to download this file which is on Neo > http://willscorner.net/bwtest/dl.tv.026.mov (159MB) and see if it is as slow. If it is then there a problem with the network. If it isn't then there is a problem with the server you are currently on. Could be NFS or load issues.

FWIW, I saw average 285 KB/s from your site, and 388-412 KB/s from digital-life download site.

Cheers,

Thanks.

It seems to be a server issue, as both myself and others are getting good download rates from other locations.

nani, contact support and tell them what you did, point them to the thread and make clear the problem isn't with the connection but with the server. Hopefully they will move you to another server. :)
