Problem uploading big files through ftp

It seems impossible to upload big files (i.e. archive of my websites, I'm currently migrating to dreamhost) through ftp. I receive a "550 SIZE: Operation not permitted" then, it tries to upload but time-out.
Thanks anyone for help on this matter. This is quite urgent as I need to ensure everything is working fine on Dreamhost before the end of the Trial Period.
