CPU minute usage warning - I don't want to go

Hi, I need some help. My site, phillyfuture.org, has been quarenteened (put on a special server with restricted capabilities) by Dreamhost due to his CPU utilization.

In the reports I see only php.ini as the main culpret. I attempted to follow the isntructions found here:

But my site became inoperable afterwards so of course I switched back. Can anyone help? I am running CivicSpace/Drupal.

If I can't figure out this problem, I'm going to have to migrate to a new hosting solution. I really don't want to. I think Dreamhost offers a good balance of support and features.

Interestingly enough - Philly Future is a fairly low traffic site. Around 10k visitors a day. We consume high bandwidth due to our ingest of RSS.

That's the downside with DreamHost. If your site is popular (and I'm assuming yours is) and if you have dynamic content, then you're going to use a lot of CPU time. You won't come close to using your bandwidth and disk allocation.

I suggest you look around for a deticated server; not sure if you can afford that though.

Agreed. All that's deficient is the service.

I'm not familiar iwth drupal, but you probably want to look into what you can do to optimize it. Sometimes there's hacks or mods aviable that makes the code run faster and cleaner - thus taking up less cpu time.

Also, if there's a way to cache pages instead of having them dynamicaly loaded that might work out for you too. You might try some searches for optimizing drupal, or something to that effect.

I have Drupal's cache activated and am caching to the filesystem what I've figured to be resource hogs. But without being able to break down the resource report from Dreamhost further - I am at a loss.

The machine I'm running on does not allow me to adjust cron, does not have curl or wget. It might have more disabled - but I have no idea what - these things simply stopped working as they should one day and I noticed they moved me to a different machine.

Can anyone help at all? Anyone with how to get detailed statistics? Do DreamHost employees dwell here whatsoever?

I wish I could help you. DreamHost employees only occasionally post here. You're better off just contacting support to see if they can help.

The only thing I can suggest is that you move off drupal and install a more CPU efficient CMS. I don't know enough about CMSes to give a suggestion, sorry.

Like I said before: If your site is very popular, you may be forced to get a dedicated server. If the site gets a ton of hits, then any CMS you install will take up a lot of CPU time. There's only so much dynamic content you can cache and only so many tweaks you can apply.
