Services down

Services down

My websites are down at the moment (on "absinthe"), together with email and FTP. I've already opened a support ticket, but I thought I'd mention it here.

Services have now returned. All is well with the world.

Well, almost.

I just got a reply from support that everything is happy now, but my sites are still all inaccessible.

I think I'll use this free time to look at some other hosting companies. I'm sick of the down time.

And while I'm ranting, DH still can't seem to provide any status when they're having issues. I checked the announcements, the blog, the emergency status page, nothing. I have to send in a G.D. support request to get my G.D. sites working again. </rant>

I'm on scotch and have mail but no web, ftp, ssh, or jabber. Submitted a ticket but thought I'd chime in here, too.

>I'm on scotch

There's an idea. I'll join you :)

My sites have been down (on pico) but are now up again, and MySQL seems a little slow.

I too went hunting round the DH site looking for a some sort of status message. Something as simple as the traffic light system that they use at http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=status would be just dandy, would be human-maintainable and would probably stop a deluge of support tickets being generated every time this happens.

Second that on MySQL.

vermouth was down this morning but very soon after I notived and sent a note DH it was back up. Databases are still crawling though.

Yep. MySQL (tib) slow, also http downloads (patton) slow. MP3 downloading at 8kB on my 1mB line (running at full speed else where on the net). Not good when your trying to optimise your site and test changes :(

We need better status info, there are always posts about DB crawls etc on this forum, but never any official mention by DH on blog/status/announce where it should be. Maybe a quick e-mail to customers on the same servers that have been reported/found faulty.

My server (nexus) has been flaky ever since last night. The status.dreamhost.com page showed some maintenace was scheduled for last night but should only have affected webmail and the control panel. Well it took down my site entirely for some time.

Ever since then my site has been up and down all morning, and when it's up it's ridiculously slow too. The status.dreamhost.com page seem to have reverted back to 9/14 and last nights update notice is now gone.

I am guessing they're still having router issues, better have it fixed soon!

Are you sure it's the servers? I think DreamHost had some network issues. I know something was up with Global Crossing because I was getting routed to Level3 and then Mzima today, about an hour or two ago.

Did your server come back up. Mine has been down and back up several times the last coupl of days and now I can't access through the browser or FTP or any other method.

I don't get it. Dreamhost used to be fantastic. Their support for these things sure has dwindled. Rather than giving me double the disk space, how about twice the service - or at least reliable uptime.

yeah... i don't want the double disk space... i want better quality service and less crowded servers.

it is ABSOLUTELY TRUE that we're on overcrowded servers because I have many accounts w/ dreamhost.. whenever I sign up, the servers run ok.. overtime.. when they pack more accounts on the same servers.. performance decreases from .02s page load to .5s page load... and i've noticed this just about everytime i make another website for a client.. i'm soooo FED up with this BS

Host-tracker.com shows my total uptime, forever, as being 94.56%. Wondering what anyone else's third-party uptime monitor says?

Here at SH there are service failures almost daily, so providing accurate status would probably cost more manpower than DH can afford.

Oops, forgot to come back and post an update! My total downtime was fairly short--support replied to my ticket in less than half an hour and said they'd had to reboot the server I'm on. No problems since that I've been able to detect.

Host-tracker.com lists my total uptime as 99.31%.
Edited to add--I've been using them since early September, so that figure includes the power outage downtime from a couple of weeks ago but doesn't really give a long-term view yet.

This is really bad, my website is down again.

the past 6 days i've been trying to advertiste my site,

they've been down for 3 of the days.

so about a 50~ downtime so far in the most crucial times, iam looking for another host,

its down one day, up the next, and repeats, i haven't had dreamhost for long, and im going to switch and am going to ask for my money back. this is unacceptable, especially without any notices, whatsoever.

That's about how long I've been using it, too. Wonder why my uptime stats are so dramatically worse?

I'm amazed, and very sorry to hear about the kinds of problems people have had. I've been hosting sites (and signing other people up) on Dreamhost for years, and now the site I rely on for my livelihood has been subject to chonically recurring outages.

That site gets a couple of thousand hits a day, and it's been down for an HOUR again today.

This outage situation has been going on for *weeks* and I've yet to receive a single reply that said anything other than "admin is looking into it..."

I've written at least three letters in the last week saying THIS IS A CHRONIC PROBLEM and all I get are vague answers, "... if it isn't corrected soon..."

What is "soon" supposed to mean?

I'm in a situation now of dreading opening the browser because it's hit-and-miss if the site is going to open, and I'm supposed to say, "oh, well they're 'looking into it' and something might be done to fix it - 'soon'. I feel so much better now!"

What is "soon" supposed to mean? How much more downtime do they subject people to before they do something about it?

I am so disappointed with this, it is not anything like the kind of service I've counted on for years.

Site's been down for 90 minutes... and counting.

Up, down, up, down....I don't know what is going on, but what I do know is the timing of this FREAKING SUCKS! It is crucial to me to have a reliable site right now due for a wealth of reasons and I continue to see the "error id: "bad_httpd_conf" message.

Great for business.

Re: Services down

Posted by: chrisjj
Posted on: 2005-09-27 12:33:00

> I continue to see the "error id: "bad_httpd_conf" message

That's a long-known problem independent of the yo-yo service issues.

When I got it, Support said:

> > The error occurs whenever a web or dns change is made to your domain from
> > the web panel. It takes up to two hours for the server to reload and for
> > the changes to go into effect. Part of the process is for the httpd conf
> > file to be rewritten. There is a small amount of time when it hasn't been
> > that's when the error occurs. It should clear itself up relatively
> > quickly, between 15 min and 2 hours.

though in my experience:

a) it can result from a panel change to 'type of web service'
b) it did not clear up in two hours. It cleared up only after I
alerted Support.

Re: Services down

Posted by: redcoat
Posted on: 2005-09-27 12:39:00

Exactly! I was given the 2-hour line. I have alerted them a number of times and haven't heard anything substantial.

Which begs the question...why have a panel changes if it means your site is going to be unavailable?

Re: Services down

Posted by: chrisjj
Posted on: 2005-09-27 12:53:00

Good question. But I've given up hoping for a straight answer from DH on this problem. Support can't even agree amongst themselves on the b*llshit brush-off. One of them told me:

> This should not happen again, it was a one time error.

yet it has been recurring for over a year here.

What I do believe is that the updates that can causes your site to do down with this error are not restricted to your panel - an update by /any/ user sharing your server can shaft your site. Very poor.

yep happening again, dreamhost has been terrible for the last 2-3 years...and it seems to be getting worse and worse even if they keep upgrading our plans for free, it's really pointless if nothing works online.

I can't ssh into my machine (or use sftp):
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

First noticed the problem at around 9:00pm PDT, Sept. 30. Everything else still looks ok (actual site, mail).

I've gotten the connection closed by remote host before, when I was behind a firewall, could this be the case for you? It may well not be, especially if you were able to get in before and you've made no changes to your firewall, but I just thought I'd offer the possibility.

mattail:

Thanks for the reply. I doubt the problem is on my end, as I successfully connect to my DreamHost account numerous times every day via ssh and sftp. I've made no changes to the settings on my end. Regular ftp still works fine. I've also submitted a help ticket, but I like to post in the forums while I'm waiting so that I can commiserate with others :)
