Domain Ownership?

I'm a little confused about domain ownership and registration. It seems to me I've heard of cases where someone registered a domain through a host or something and eventually learned that they didn't actually own the domain, the host company did. This seems not quite possible but has anyone heard of this sort of thing?
I'm not talking about "domainname.hostname.com".
Relatedly, do I own my domain registered through DreamHost?
