This is friggen ridiculous. I have never had so many hosting problems in my life. I simply cannot believe the lag, the crashes, the database servers locking up.. it's just unbelievable. I heard good things about DH, but now I don't think I would recommend them to anybody. Am I the only one having a site issue every single day? If not, what web/db servers are you on? I am making a request to be moved onto another server and I'm wondering what the stable servers are. Thanks.

I'm on hops.. database on snowball. '3 hours of downtime in the last quarter as they upgraded snowball's hardware.

Nothing besides that as far as downtime. (In the last 12 months or so). Previous to that I had one weekend-long downtime snafu due to a raid failure on dreamhost's side. 'Very long downtime due to paranoia on their end making sure they didn't lose data.

I've run into a few problems over the past few days just because they were upgrading the OS on their servers -- so everything was down for a few hours, and there've been lots of little wrinkles to iron out. This was rather off-putting (since I'd just signed up!) but I'm withholding judgement for now... I'll see how the server gets by when massive changes *aren't* in process.

You might have fallen victim to the same upgrade....

No your not the only one I have had a lot of problems with the server off and on the past few months. I hate waking up to my sites being down. Or MYSQL. I'm going to go with a dedicated server when they finish adding on to their building.

I've been getting this problem. MySQL has been down for several minutes on several occasions over the last few days. Total downtime has not been very significant to date, but it is enough for me to start rewriting old code to take it into account.

Re: Ridiculous

Posted on: 2005-08-24 22:25:00

dlgsoft, I'm almost to that point myself. Even my cron jobs aren't working correctly now, and what is p***ing me off the most is that all my support requests are being ignored. My site goes down, I send a request -> ignored. My cron jobs don't work, sent request (1 1/2 days ago) -> ignored. etc etc. If I do not receive stable hosting soon I'll be gone as well. Good thing I'm in the 97 day trial still. At least I will not have wasted money (directly. loses due to site being down is another story) on top of my time with this horrible host.

I guess only the pissed off people are posting...

I"ve had DH for well over a year with no problems that I can complain about. Maybe some feature complaints, but that's not what this thread is concerned with.

My web server is gotcha, mail is on sack.
MySQL is on a handful, but my most active databasses are on azrael and krakatoa.

Ofcourse I'd have higher performance with a dedicated server, but I've never experienced shared hosting as good as this has been. (I can remember only one outage when a massive DOS attack took down atleast one of thier main routers.)

Yep, I'm having the same problems. I've been having intermittant MySQL downtime (on gage) for months, and web server downtime every couple of weeks. My site is down right now, and was yesterday for a couple of hours as well. As usual I received no notifications, warnings or appologies, and when you mail support they usually say "Well its up now, let us know if you have more problems" as if that solved anything!

Re: Ridiculous

Posted on: 2005-08-25 13:56:00

There are good servers hosting mysql at dreamhost, I am on about 20 or so of them. But, there is something wrong with a few of DHs servers. I *knocking on wood* haven't experienced any issues with the ones I am on.

I don't think they have anything to do with which plan you are on. I have the Strictly business, quite a few Code Monsters and sweet dreams too. I will note that one of the mysql servers I am on on my Strictly business plan, I am also using on one of my code monster plans.

I imaging DH has hundreds of servers that are in use for mysql. And, a few of them are experiencing serious issues (I doubt any host out there has NEVER experienced a problem with their servers.)

If I started experiencing problems, I would be upset too. One thing to remember when you are sending in support requests, is to, when sending in a support request, let Dreamhost know which server you are experiencing the trouble on...one of my DH plans uses 9 different mysql servers. If you are unhappy and getting no where, ask them to move you to another mysql server.

I do feel for the users experiencing issues. Especially when their sites are their livelihoods.

Good luck to you.

Don't they get that info anyway from the domain name asked for by the Support form?

I'm Strictly Business as well, with domains on dawber and databases on azrael, felix, hobbes, cheshire, juno, scratchy, sylvester, meow, gibson, stimpy, gwen, and flipper.

I've wondered if there's some sort of ranking with support, but wow... that'd be weird if there was ranking with servers. My tracert resolves to basic-*, too (different for different domains).

>With such little hard facts as to the causes of these problems, what's to suggest going to a dedicated server will evade them?

I'm going with their dedicated server plan in two months. They are in the middle of adding on to their building and as of right now out of space for more servers.

I do know the facts because I ask their techs when there is a issue like there has been off and on for the past two months. The last issue was an upgrade. Am I happy with the down time? No I'm not happy about it at all. I get upset at times because this is my business and it's like walking into my business and not being able to open my shop. Not good..

But I guess that's what one gets for having 100 domains and a lot of them are on gotcha(dreamhost) while others are hosted on another server. I should have been on a dedicated server a LONG time ago lol.

When you are on share hosting more problems tend to rise then on dedicated I would guess? Due to bandwidth issues maybe, user errors etc.

I don't think so, one of my domains has 4 different mysql servers.

so, another question from 'shad' arises on this one...maybe a couple of questions...we are moving to a dedicated server also, does this mean our mysql, and our main site and our email is *all* on the same "dedicated" server? I, too, have over 100 sites at dreamhost, but only one site needs go to dedicated due to its growth. I am curious about this.

thanks

Yes, everything will be on the dedicated server which is really nice because you can update the configs from the web panel to speed up changes.

The mail being on the server was one of my concerns too but it's been rock solid and you can still use the filters with the server since the filters are separate machines. The mx record is just pointed to them and then pointed to you.

If you have any questions at all let me know because I have a dedicated server for one of my clients.

I'm also saving up and looking to move my sites to a dedicated server in the future too.

Try reporting the issue that the service repeatedly goes down, rather than it /is/ down.

That's your problem. Unless you want the "Glad its working for you now" response, try reporting the issue that the service repeatedly goes down, rather than it /is/ down.

Hi,

I'm new here, still within 97 days, just moved from BlueHost. Did I jump from the frying pan into the fire?

We're wanting to set up a forum and a chatroom on our site.

I'm not that techie, so let me ask: would a dedicated server be best with regards of downtimes?

Thanks for any help,

BTW,

I was creating a new db yesterday, and after I clicked 'Add Database Now!' my browser hanged there, no internet activity for as long as I kept it opened. I came back later after closing it, and saw the db was there, added to the list, however I could never install the chatroom I wanted to.

So I'm back in today, and for the past 20 minutes, it's been tyring to delete the db I created (8kb). The browser is still displaying activity (the little globe is rolling) but the modem lights are not moving.

Anyone had this happen? Would that be the type of problems many are having with MySQL?

Thanks,

flint

I haven't seen that, but I am most likely on a different mysql server. You could try from another computer, like a friends. I created 9 databases the other day without a hitch, in under a few minutes.

Also, which chatroom are you trying to install?

Thanks for responding Shad,

I'm with beverly?

chatroom: FlashChat from Tufat.com

I delete the db I had created. Then recreated a new one, and it took just a few minutes. Not sure what's the bog.

The chat is working good , however when I try to edit a room's name or even delete that room from my admin screen, I get this ERROR message:

Warning: Unexpected character in input: '' (ASCII=16) state=1 in /usr/local/dh/cgi-system/php.cgi on line 3195

Any clue?

I had a similar problem with coppermine photo gallery. The only way I could find around it was to do one of the following: run php as an apache module (uncheck the run php as cgi box on your domain configuration panel) or, compile your own php5 as described in the wiki. I believe the problem has to do with php-cgi and PATH_INFO. I didn't try the method described in this pmwiki-users thread, though. Maybe that would work for you?

Your mysql server or service might have been down at that point, we apologize. Your site seems to be fine now. If you're still having problems, let us know the actual URL so we can take a look for you.

I installed Gallery and it works fine with (and needs) "Run PHP as CGI".

I installed pmwiki and it won't work with "Run PHP as CGI", but does work when I turn it off.

I could use Mediawiki instead of pmwiki. That works OK. But I prefer pmwiki -- at least for now.

Is there a way I can use both Gallery and pmwiki?

"Compiling your own custom PHP" at
https://panel.dreamhost.com/kbase/index.cgi?area=2538
talks about "compile PHP in your home directory and tell PHP scripts to use this binary instead of the default system PHP binary."

Is this what I want to do?

Turn off PHP-CGI for your domain, then put this line into an .htaccess file in the directory you installed Gallery in:

AddType php-cgi .php

That will run PHP as CGI for that directory (and subdirectories) only. I'm doing this with Gallery on one of my sites and it works fine (now if only it weren't so god-awful slow).
