Hmmm
I am in the process of uploading a chat room. As I install I get an error message indicating that my connection to the database failed.
So I am srambling to determine if I had not written down my correct username & password.
Could it be another problem with the server?

yeah, when something like that happen, I always tend to think that my code is not written well or it's a problem on my side. but i don't think so.
i had some problems with myadmin a few days ago, and only a day after DH replied to my support messages and I realized they changed the whole UI at myAdmin, which explains the glitch.
I hear dreamhost got lots of sql issues.
I hope not.

Ok, I am new to all of this.
I am uploading a program that needs access to my database. I get an error message saying that the connection failed. So, I am wondering if I have the wrong passwords & username in the config file.
Then I come here and find this thread.
Now I am wondering if it is a server issue, or my issue. Any suggestions are appreciated. Should I just wait this out?
Thanks

I just happened to get online from home and checked.. Same deal here. Looks like meow is down. They had moved my DB once before to this server and now I'm learning that this one has problems too? Yay.
Has this been an ongoing thing? I just recently moved to this webhost (sent here with high regards from a friend) and other than the SQL server/process dying, I've been pretty pleased. Except for when I can't get to my website...

i've never dealt with server outages for more than an hour before. have they offered an explanation as to why they have these really long outages?
Posted by: limicell
Posted on: 2005-04-15 22:29:00
Last time I emailed support, they replied only a day after (I sent 3 messages) saying that they don't know what the problem is because they can login to my db with no problems. Indeed, the next day it was OK but later that day I realized that Myadmin UI has changed (not sure if it's related or not).
This time around, I emailed them earlier today and they didn't reply.... oops, just got a reply. they apologize. didn't offer and explanation.
I'm kind of new to the whole websites business, and glad to hear it is not typical for a server to be out for more than an hour.

the message included an appology and said there was a serious problem but nothing specific.
i guess i'll tough it out with midphase until i have the confidence to migrate all my accounts over to this service

not common but it sucks.. if there at a bad host go head and move over here.. the support here kind of sucks.. compared to other places, but you gotta think ,"you get what you pay for" ;)

If your considering Dreamhost for MySQL: DO NOT DO IT. Unreliable, flaky and horrible.

All my problems with DH in since February or so have been fixed (and replied to) in a matter of hours; usually less than 30 minutes. I was worried about DH for a while, back in January, but they seem to have gotten their act back together lately. I'd recommend them.

Thats fair enough, but seriously, if you want to use MySQL database they are a MESS right now. They're dropping out (yes, all of them) for around 6 hours a day at least, and support do nothing. I'm so p***ed

Are you sure they're doing nothing? Maybe they're doing something, but haven't fixed it yet. Being p***ed shows you're not happy, but otherwise doesn't help much, imho.
Good luck,

Dude, how can they be doing *anything* if for a week, every day all my databases (which are on different servers) go down? And they've not even apologised, let alone offer me compensation of any form.
Being p***ed shows i'm not happy, but what else can I do? The support staff do what they can, but I fear there's some serious DB server issues that they're not telling me/us about. I mean there are known problems with the DBs at the moment, numerous DH support staff have told me this. But is it on the Status page? NOPE. Have there been announcements? NOPE. Have they acknowledged to me that the service at the moment is totally unacceptable (which it is)? NOPE.
Being p***ed with DH might not achieve a lot right now, but i feel ive tried everything I can do help DH sort this out. They suggested that I email them as soon as DBs go down so the admin can isolate the problem there and then. So i do that, only to get a response 6 hours later saying "Um, they seem to be working now..thanks, bye". What the hell? No explanation, apology or anything, and to boot, the DBs go down again half an hour after the email and there i am, stuck in ANOTHER 6 hour support ticket queue.
I feel like tearing my hair out. DH have until wednesday before I file for a refund and take my business elsewhere (im not the only one, i've referred two other customers and they're equally if not more pissed off).
DH, right now, your DBs suck.

No, not all mysql servers on dreamhost are having such problems. Only one or two. I've been a customer for 8 months now, and have seen alomst no down time for any of my data. Just a couple of weeks ago they upgraded one of the machines I had a database on and it was only down for about 5 min. over that.
I have 7 or 8 mysql databases and they are on three different servers.
I would also reccomend DH...

One thing you can do is backup your database, then create a new database and import that backup. Then, change all of your settings to point to the new database. This should (randomly) place you on a new MySQL server.

<em>They're dropping out (yes, all of them) for around 6 hours a day at least, and support do nothing</em>
Such a generic statement is patently untrue; I'm using 12 databases of my own (on azrael, felix, cheshire, sylvester, tib, stimpy, gwen, and flipper), and haven't had that problem with a single one, a single <em>time</em> -- since February. I'm sorry you're having this problem and that support isn't responding, but it's simply not the case that all their MySQL databases are messing up. :-)

I'm glad nobody else has had problems. When I said all the DBs had been dropping out, i meant all the ones I was using. This has been 4 (meow, griz, snowball, tib). Today from 12 GMT to 16 GMT they were all down. Again. Yes, all of them. This has been the case for the past week or so.
All you DH fanboys, i'm glad you're enjoying their supposedly great DB service. I was for a few weeks, but no longer. Every other aspect is great, execpt DB at the moment. Yes, at the moment. A fix is being worked on, but everything is still extremely flaky for me at the moment. But i suppose all you people saying there's nothing wrong havent been in touch with support/admin and had this confirmed to you, right?
Please dont take my venting personally. They are *just a host*. The DBs have problems at the moment (not my words, DH's); DH are big and bad enough to take their own heat over this.

In reply to:But i suppose all you people saying there's nothing wrong havent been in touch with support/admin and had this confirmed to you, right?
I don't need to contact DreamHost support to find out what my database uptime is like. All I have to do is visit my site and see whether or not it is working. And, the only downtime that I've ever noticed was when DH lost their main router, and few times related to maintenance announcements. My database has been up 24/7 for at least the past month. I guess I must be on the only good database server.

There have indeed been problems on several of our recently deployed database servers and we have been adding additional servers and moving databases around to spread out the load. In a shared hosting situation it is impossible to know in advance how much load a particular set of databases will impose on a piece of hardware so we have to estimate based on other servers and that's far from an exact science.
The majority of the problems are caused by one or a few individuals with very busy websites or poor data indexing, or both. We have recently put a lot of development time into tools that help us track individual database usage more closely so we can identify problems and address them more quickly. That involves adding table indexes where needed (we do that rather than disable the database entirely) or moving very heavy use databases onto dedicated server plans. Our previous tools have not scaled well with our growth and have shown some strain recently.
Anyway, yes there have been problems and we are aware of it and have been taking steps to resolve them. We have added several additional servers and have been moving databases around regularly to redistribute the load. Sometimes a full fix takes some time, unfortunately.
We understand it is frustrating to not know what's going on and not be able to do anything about it yourself. Perhaps this information will help a bit.

Thanks for the post ;) People just get frustated when services go down and theres not even one post from a DH worker on the forum to inform the users of whats going on. Im guessing everyone just want a answer that you guys understand whats going on and are fixing it and most importantly a ETA on the problem.
;)
Thanks again for reply.

I'm not denying that your servers have had problems -- just wanted to point out that not all of them have. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I've been with DH for 2 years now, in which time I've come to have the expectation that eventually things'll get back to a reasonable level (which they always do, and for a reasonable amount of time).
