SSL mail certificate

Hi,
read everything about SSL certificate mismatch. The thunderbird extension solves all of my problems.
But, on my iPod touch I don't get to add a whole lot of extensions. So the only way to get imap+ssl is to use the alternate server a1.balanced.homie.mail.dreamhost.com.
Problem is, my login doesn't work. I've tried
1. shell username
2. email username
3. <email username>@example.com
in other words all possibilities including the one indicated to work (3). I am typing my password correctly :)
I just can't login. Which is a huge pain.
I also get the same problem if I try to use pine from a shell server. My only option there is to use a1.balanced.blah, and no login ...
I've posted a support request as well, but I'd appreciate some forum wisdom.
