Upgrading from 32bit libraries to 64

I received an email from DH stating that my site was moved to a server running 64bit libraries for php and of course it has broken the site. I was getting internal server errors and decided to try my newbie hand at trying to install php5 as per an email suggestion from the wiki.

It seemed to fix the server errors but gave me a few more such as this one:
Failed loading
/usr/local/dh/apache/template/phpext/zend_optimizer4/Z
endOptimizer.so:

I suppose something has gone wrong with the install process perhaps. I tried following the wiki as well as I could but now seem to be stuck. Anyone out there got some help for me?

Ensure any loaders are updated to the 64bit versions.

I would love to if I only knew what you meant. I really am a fish out of the water doing this sort of thing. Any chance on a step by step instruction? I find that is a good way to learn.
