expanding archives

I've uploaded 9 cms archives and need to expand those archives and work peermissions once the files have been expanded. I do not know SSH and the other wysiwyg tools do not do the job.
Looking for recommendations on tools to use as well as tutorials for using SSH to accomplish the job.
Help is much appreciated.
