In short, I am at a loss here. I need to configure my server's php.ini file and I have googled and done all that needed to do but can't just figure it out :(
Can anyone just give me a step-by-step guide on doing this? I will be forever grateful to the person who helps out.

There are two very good "step by step guides" available in the DH wiki for modifying your php.ini:

If you follow the directions carefully and precisely, you should be fine.
