Common problem or hacked server?

So, I have been unable to access my webmail today since about 3 PM... figured it was just a simple config problem... really nothing else going on to alert me to a problem... file a ticket, wait for a reply... tonight I finally get home and go to check the ticket... of course the tech didn't understand the problem or read through what I wrote carefully. Yes it was working previously... duh.
IMAP and Webmail are still not functioning so I go to SSH in to check if I can use Unix mail... just to delete spam and make sure my mailbox doesn't fill up... I log in and get:
Could not chdir to home directory /home/*********: No such file or directory
uh... really? I try to CD to it... nope... it's really not there... Oh Crap! I launch a web browser and sure enough all my web sites read:
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: "bad_httpd_conf"
so... since my home directory is gone... is that a common thing to happen accidentally or was it a malicious attack by someone?
