Are you just looking for a cash discount or are there other extra free features you think you'll benefit from?

What are you going to be hosting here, if you don't mind us asking? It'll help us recommend a good type of code for you.

Nope. promo codes may *only* be used by new users - existing users cannot use *any* promo code.

I'd be delighted if DreamHost just ended the whole promo code madness and we went back to the old system.

Out of curiosity what was the old system?

In a nutshell, the old system gave a referrer either a "flat fee" one-time payout of a fixed amount (it has varied, but was most recently at the $97 rate) or a percentage of the revenue for the life of the referred account.

This resulted in "all codes being equal" to the referrer *and* to the referred customer. Occasionally, a DH run "promo" would offer a "discount" to the new customer, but generally speaking a referral resulted in a payment to the referrer and no discount for the new user.

The big change was letting the referrer "pass on" any and/or all of the referral fee to the customer as a discount, hence the proliferation of assorted and varied promo codes which provide varying levels of discount and reward to the referrer.

I have been wondering about that. What if a new customers sees the ad on my web page, clicks on it, goes to the forum and sees a code for a better discount. Does DH Honor the first click or what the customer wants?

Thats a very good point..the answer is whatever promo code the user types in over-rides any referrer cookie.

A lot of "initial" referrers lose their referrals this way wink

Customer gets what they want, which is a good thing.

Promo codes are better because the customer knows what they're getting and where they got it from.

It used to be that if you saw a link posted, it was a referral link, though not obvious to everyone. At least the codes are obvious.

So, if someone helped you out a lot and you wanted them to have credit, you had to be real careful about what you clicked on around here.

Even if they went back to a referral system, it should either be by manually entering a referrer, or don't overwrite cookies.

Plus, it should only link to the homepage. Back then, if someone asked a question, instead of an answer, they'd get a "Click here" referral link to a page that had the answer.

Hey, spammer! You recently added your promo code to the DreamHost article on the Wikipedia, in clear violation of the DreamHost affiliate program TOS. Your edit has been reverted.

What will happen if i setup for recurring commission and someone sign up using one of my promo codes? They'll get the discount and/or extra features. But what will happen to secondary referral commission? One time $5? Or recurring 5% of forever paid by the customer?
Oh,is there any way to know the person whom(direct referral using my promo code or link) i referred after his/her sign up.It would be better to contact them or give them some extra help such as advertising his/her site on my website for a week or more or anything else. Advertising is also helpful for new websites for being indexed quickly on search engines. Is my idea useful, what you think?

Promo codes are automatically one-time payments.

Nope. And that's probably a good thing, because I can't imagine that many people wouldn't feel like they were being spammed.

If you want to take that approach, offer it up front and let them contact you with their ID if it's something they want. Then, you can just look up the ID in your referrals and see if they're entitled to whatever it is.

Or you could just wait and let nature take its course.
1. I think a lot of people just want to do their thing.
2. If people want help, there is plenty of help offered here on the boards and on a zillion other boards. I have noticed that there aren't many posts over in the "promotion" board so I'm guessing there aren't a lot of folks looking for help. There are some good base suggestions there so maybe it's just that everyone's just following the generic advice from there.
3. Play to your strengths. The best promotional advice you can give anyone is to focus on providing good content in areas of their expertise or interest. Monetization comes later.

It's a bit off topic, but I'm a bit leery of the idea in whatever form of paying for incoming links like the $102 referral people are doing.

Anyway, I'm not sure why I've gone so far off topic and I do apologize for it.
