Multiple Domain Names

Multiple Domain Names

I know our web plans come with the option to host more than one domain name, and I am considering bidding on a generic site name that is in our market. Currently our site is named for the company, which is sort of descriptive.

If I were to have two different site names, could I split my existing site over both names? Specifically would PHP Sessions be able to carry over from one site to another. Also could either site access the same mySQL database?

Thanks for any advice,

Jeff

when you add the domain in the web panel you will be given the option to "mirror" another domain. Sounds like, from your description, you could have your new domain mirror the current domain and you'd get the exact same site with different TLDs at the beginning of the URL.

If you mirrored domain1 then:

domain1.com/about/index.html

would be the exact same thing as:

domain2.com/about/index.html

Sessions would not be an issue, you'd just maintain the origianl site and the other would be along for the ride

That is an option, but for some search engine reasons, I am curious about splitting my site. I would like all my "how to" and generic type information to be posted on the second site. I would like all my product type stuff to be on my company named site.

The menu on the site, would then reference pages on two different sites. Can php sessions be maintained across these? What about databases?

I AM curious about those search engine reasons too, if you don't mind sharing. Thanks.

Search Engine Reasons
- Overture only allows one site per purchased phrase (unless you are ebay)
- The site name itself may be considered a better match to some terms
- The new site name may come with existing links that would improve a rating with Google.
- I honestly haven't figured out the implications at sites like Yahoo yet. Do you think this would hurt?

If you have experience to the contrary, please share.

Splitting a Site
All this search engine discussion is meaningless if I cannot split my site across two names. Does anyone know if this can be done?

Thanks,

Jeff
