SVN email updates?

How can I get SVN to email me every time there is a commit?
I read the wiki:
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Subversion#Setting_up_post_commit_emails
and various google posts, but cant figure this out.
I renamed
post-commit.tmpl
to
post-commit
and edited the last line, changing the example.org line to my email address. permissions and ownership seem correct..
but i still don't get any emails on commits.
any ideas?
