help with image magick

hi!
I have this perl script that allows visitors to upload images into their directories on the website.
They can then see thumbnails of the images on a page in the website. However, these thumbnails are the same original pictures they uploaded instead of REAL (small file size) thumbnails.
I understand Image Magick allows us to actually make real thumbnails for pictures being uploaded.
Can someone help me how this works - commands/process etc.
