Is there a website where they collect all bad web hosts? I had some problems with FREEWEBDOT.COM a while ago and I feel like telling the world about it.

FREEWEBDOT.COM is a VERY BAD web host

Every web host on the planet has people that think they are horrible, so all you need to do is list every single host in the world on a page that says "sucks" at the bottom.

And even that would still be free advertising for them.

Bashing them here is irrelevant, plus you're giving them a link that can only help them in the search engines. They are now being linked to by a better host's site, so they'd probably thank you.

Since it was a free host, everyone already knows that's not the way to go. If bad experiences weren't the norm, no one would pay for hosting.

As far as switching to paid, that's their right. It happens all the time with web sites, software, directories, etc... Even Dreamhost practically gives away the first year of hosting to get you in the door.

Plus, you'll probably find that no one really cares, unless they personally have a problem with them.

Solution: Switch hosts and move on. Not worth worrying about.

I didn't give them a link. The link is to my page, and even if there name is in the link it doesn't improve their search engine rankings.

Actually, that depends. At one point, I believe Matt from Google said they can pick up when a URL is typed out on a page... though vague on how they actually use the info. It's not exactly hard to do, considering how many programs automatically hyperlink URLs.

Anchor text is also analyzed by search engines. So using their name in your link, then typing out their address on your site isn't exactly a hard path to follow.

In any case, it's still free advertising, good or bad. If only good advertising helped, Dreamhost would censor this forum and kill the comments on the blog & status site.

Is bad advertising good? I personally don't feel attracted by bad advertising. And when it comes to DreamHosts Forum, Blog and status site, they are actually god advertising. Because they show a company with a high degree of transparency.

So to conclude, when I write that FREEWEBDOT.COM is a bad web host this will probably keep the reader from using their services. Witch means this "bad advertising" does not benefit FREEWEBDOT.COM.

There are websites dedicated to saying Dreamhost is the worst host in the world. Who takes them seriously? Has it had any affect on them becoming one of the biggest hosts in the world? Even Dreamhost laughs at them and has linked to them from their blog.

How many times have you heard someone blame Wal-mart for the downfall of society? I wonder why their parking lots are still full, around the clock, despite all the hatred? Maybe it's because the silent majority often ignores the noisy minority?

Someone that goes to that host today, is going to look at what they offer for the price and decide based on that. They're not going to care that you used to host there for free and don't think they should be allowed to charge.

If you really think it's a great idea, then roll with it. You don't need anyone's approval here. It just seems pretty obvious *to me* that it's a waste of time and you're not going to accomplish anything.

Like I said, every single host has people that hate them and whine about them where ever they go. If people took that crap seriously, all hosts would shut down because they all have people that hate them.

Knowing that, how do you expect your complaining about a once-free cheapo host to have any impact? Where's the payoff? If you just feel like venting, then you already accomplished that on your blog.

Also keep in mind that if you push too hard, they could push back. I'd say you're already pushing it with "FREEWEBDOT.COM is a criminal hosting provider in my opinion." -- even with the "in my opinion" part. I don't see any criminal behavior in what you've described.

Seriously, your biggest gripe with them seems to be that they stopped being free. It's not much different than people paying $22.40 for a year of hosting here, then getting hit with the $120 bill for the second year. It's very common to lure people in with freebies or special offers.

Sure, you know in advance with DH (though some seem to claim they didn't), but they also told you in advance and you had the option to leave then. You state right on your site that you paid because you didn't feel like moving. That was your choice. When a host makes a change you don't like, you leave. It's simple. Otherwise, you agree to their terms by staying.

Hey! There is no way to describe how badly I hate AT&T, and I take every opportunity (just like this one!) to tell everyone I can about how badly they suck and how evil they are. Even members of Congress point out that they are evil! Yet, look how much any of that has impacted *their* business! wink

But see... you just advertised for them. Now everyone that hates you will like AT & T and sign up. tongue

I think people forget that it's not just numbers, but percentages. I'd rather be with a 10,000 customer host that has 100 unhappy customers than an 8 customer host with 3 unhappy customers. A company with zero unhappy customers either has 0 customers, or they just started their business 2 minutes ago. wink

There have been a few shills for them in the forums. But since they offended everyone here, I don't think anyone but someone that got shut down for TOS violations ever went with them.

I found it absolutely hilarious that "bluehost" would refuse adult sites. And it appeared that they had a pretty seriously tight CPU policy - but that was just from cursory review.

If you don't go with DH, check out lunarpages. They seem to be the only other cool hosting company (from a functional standpoint) out there, but after some comments on the dreamhost blogs even lunarpages (business-wise) isn't anywhere near as cool.

I find BlueHost to be fine. I'd heard that Lunarpages was good too, but I don't think I could live without a shell account.
