guys, i have an idea which i would like your opinion.

i would like to setup an ads server, something like google adsense. but this wont be a profit making venture with advertisers and stuff, but it will be advertisements for open source projects.

open source project owners can advertise free(or maybe a small fee, very small to prevent fraud or spammers). webmasters who have space can apply to help advertise these open source projects. especially those webmasters using open source software for this websites/forums and so on. something to give back to the open source community.

maybe using phpadsnew to deliever the ads.

what do you think ?

Feels like i am spamming

I think most people would rather run their own ads. Personally I throw in a few "community service" announcements for projects that I like

Why not post your suggestion in the suggestion area of the ControlPanel?
I am not endorsing your proposal by the way, just pointing out a place where other users could vote on your suggestion and where it could be seen by DreamHost should they choose to look.

I do not like adverts personally perhaps you need to use another word instead of 'ads'?

Certainly a nice thing to do, but...

One problem would be convincing people to remove paying ads like Adsense, YPN, etc... to give the same space away for free. And those that don't have paying ads, probably don't because they don't want anything that looks like ads on their site.

Another thing is... do good open source projects even need help? They seem to be some of the most well-known high-traffic sites out there.

Not to mention, a lot of them already put their link in whatever you're using, which is actually free ad placement on every site that uses your product.

I'd also think that most of their traffic comes from community-based recommendations, rather than ad-clicking. I think of techies as less likely to click things that look like ads.
