So what made you guys decide you needed a totally separate domain for your status page, instead of the logical subdomain (status.dreamhost.com) you used before? Such a thing is what I refer to as a "Stupid Unnecessary Domain Name" in my Domain Hall of Shame. Or are you actually anticipating a failure so severe it takes down the entire DNS for dreamhost.com so a separate domain is the only thing that would work?

It must be a concern over the DreamHost DNS that prompted this change, because it seems to be the only logical reason for this bizarre change. There have definitely been some DNS issues recently, so perhaps this is the best option.

I think that status.dreamhost.com is a sensible address, so it may be wise for them to have it do a permanent redirect to the new site.

We are working towards making the status page completely independent of the rest of our system. status.dreamhost.com is still working as well, though. Its a good idea. It doesn't mean we don't trust ourselves it just means that we are planning for the best but preparing for the worst.

Lighten up guys! Think Happy thoughts!

Yay! I love the word forever. It has a nice enduring ring to it, evoking feelings of permanency and longevity. I feel safe in the knowledge that countless millennia from now, status.dreamhost.com will still be there to warn folks if there is anything wrong with the DreamHost service.
