To renew... or not to renew

To renew... or not to renew

That is the question.

My prepaid 1-year dreamhost plan is about to expire, and I'm pondering switching. (I'm not sure I've forgiven them for having much of the entire infrastructure down some months ago, and losing my email for 3 days... into the bit-bucket or god knows where else).

Soooo.

For a small site.. (just my lame personal pictures to post on a gallery-based site, and my own email). Any suggestions for competitors I'd compare dreamhost against?).

That's a little bit exaggerated. DreamHost lost the main router some months ago, but that's hardly "the entire infrastructure".

If nothing's responding, it's all down, from a visitor's perspective. Doesn't really matter if it's a single-point failure or multiple failures, although obviously the details matter to DH, relative to avoiding it in future.

Ok.... machines were running, but I couldn't get to them, and they lost 3 days of my email.

To the bitbucket it went. People sent stuff, but never got responses that servers were down.. etc. (I never got delayed email, etc).

Hours I can see... days is simply unacceptable.

'Wasn't meant to flame, just a question.

Oh.. the failure I'm talking about was a tad farther back. I can't recall if it was a drive failure or what.. but it took them a day or more to get the drives viewable again, and then another day to get them mounted read-write.

In that time, all email was lost..

(So.. 'twas unrelated to the router going down).

I'm still a tad miffed about it. Not horribly so, but enough to look around.

For registrations I STRONGLY suggest keeping them seperate from hosting. I use goDaddy.com and love them. phone support that speaks english, helpful people, great prices, and a good interface for getting things done.

Pick a host thats great at hosting, and a registrar thats great at "registraring".
