Introductions...

Hola, everyone -

I just thought I'd make a quick introduction here. My name is Jeff Campbell, and I'm a long-time DreamHost employee (#2, not counting our esteemed head honcho founders). You may have seen me in the past doing tech support, and now I work on marketing, sales, spam/abuse incidents, web design, the occasional bit of Perl/PHP coding, plus all sorts of other stuff. Those of you who've been around for a while may remember me from the old boards where I posted on occasion.

Outside of work I enjoy music, reading, geek stuff (Macs, Linux/Unix, coding, web stuff, etc), art, etc.

Just wanted to start off this topic, which I hope will be a good gathering spot for DH customers to talk about non-DH related interests. I plan on frequenting these boards (and not just this one) as much as time allows, so if you see me around feel free to say "Hi". :>

Hello Mr. Jeff ^_^

I just wanted to comment on how great this board is! Although I don't quite understand the replies to the message I've posted (hehe...not very computer savvy), it's great that this is available! Thank you again. ^^

Well, guess it wouldn't hurt to introduce myself (so Jeff don't feel left out). My name is Jeff Zimmerman and I work at an Adult Home as a CNA. When I'm not working there I am programming php, cgi/perl, cold fusion, html, etc. I am a co-owner of the local ISP and constantly building/upgrading the system software for user management, who's paid and unpaid.

I too also enjoy geek stuff like ,yes, Linux/Unix etc (must be the first name).

I own hammermill.org, which has absolutely nothing on it until I get further free time to ponder up an idea for it. Right now I just use it for script learning and the so such.

Well, Hope that's everything. Enjoy! smile

I'll be the conformist and join in.

I'm Alex, but everyone can also call me gerbil if they please.

I'm just a college student at UC Davis with a strong interst, as a hobby, in web design and web programming. Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean I'm a computer major. I just take my hobbies seriously :)

You can check out my web site at http://www.gerbilbox.com/ , although that domain is currently being hosted with someone else right now. Sorry, I'm still in the process of transitioning to DreamHost from my current host, but in less than a week (before mid-May 2001) my site will be happily on a DreamHost server.

My turn, I suppose :D

Anyway, my name is Kelly, I'm a freshman Computer Science major at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, New York. I've been dabbling in web design for the past three years, and have successfully taught myself HTML, dHTML, Java, Javascript, and PHP.

In my spare time I work on my personal website, spinsugar.com, and on a few websites for organizations in my school. I also continue my neverending quest to find web development internships or freelance gigs so that I might start having a passibly robust portfolio. :P I'm also a huge geek who likes to spend several consecutive days programming games in C++, with breaks only to get more doritos or snapple.

That's about it... boring, huh?

i like tacos.

Hi, my dreamhost site has been down for several days and I have not been able to get any response from various emails and faxes to dreamhost. If anyone has any contact information or ideas on how to contact dreamhost, it would be much appreciated, thanks.

Shouldn't you post this to the Troubleshooting section of this forum? I would think that the tech support and troubleshooting people would be over there, and not looking over here where the offtopic discussions are.

Did you try the support request form in the Web Control Panel? So far my barage of questions have always been answered within 24 hours.

Hello everyone.
My name is Josh Reighey, and I am a web hobbiest... I find that you can build simple websites within a few hours that can provide years of enjoyment for people all over the world. Not many hobbies provide that kind of service..

In the real world I work as a technical support analyst for a agricultural lender. I help the branch users and online banking customers use their computers more effectively. I also am starting my own software development company..

I have been a dreamhost customer for a couple of years now, and I have been quite pleased with the service. I host 3 domains here, and have a few more that I am playing with..

Well, I've just posted a bunch of messages, so I'd better introduce myself! I'm well-known to the very patient Dreamhost tech support staff, I'm sure, but the rest of you might need an intro:

To quote shamelessly from the profile I just entered, I'm a self-employed web designer who's been creating sites ever since Netscape 1.1 was the browser of choice. I currently host about 27 domains with Dreamhost and have been here since 1998 when I escaped from an evil host who must remain nameless (COUGHweb66COUGH). When not glued to my beloved Mac G3, I can be found reading, gardening, studying Wicca and other esoteric stuff, or occasionally hanging out in goth clubs.

Or, for that matter, perusing newdream.net to find the personal sites of various Dreamhost staffers. Which reminds me, Jeff, you forgot to mention you run one of the coolest sites on the net. Will I get in trouble if I tell people the URL? smile

Well I guess I'll jump on the bandwagon as well. I'm yet another Newdream employee; I do customer support and System Administration (pretty soon just System Admin stuff). If you've written in to customer support there's a pretty good chance you've heard from me at one point or another. Hopefully soon the 'Meet Newdream' section will be up on the kbase and y'all can read our bios in more depth. I've been here long enough to know better but not long enough to remember what employee number I am (15 or thereabouts maybe???).

I'm 23, a cancer, vegetarian (ok well vegan to be accurate) and live in los angeles, california. I like music of all sorts and I do a little dj work at clubs and underground events. I am also the co-founder of a small record label called 'Infinite Jazz'; our site is currently 'under renovation' which is a nice way of saying no one has the energy to redo the old site. The url is http://infinitejazz.net. My personal site can be found at http://infinitejazz.net/will/
I also have some stuff at:
http://newdream.net/~william/

I was born in Morristown, NJ (I know.. don't make fun) and went to Pitzer College in Claremont, CA for 3 years. After dropping out I lucked out and got this job. Personal interests aside from music include cooking, cats, computer stuff, and beer. Does beer count as an interest? :> I'm known for my grumpyness, but I'm a nice person deep down inside. Really.

Computer wise I'm pretty interested in *nix/ Open Source type stuff; Obviously I deal with Linux a great deal at work, and I run FreeBSD on my home and work machines. My main computer interests are DNS / Bind, electronic mail, spam prevention, security, and a little bit of shell scripting.

Speaking of Jeff's modesty, I believe he's also the individual who made this board!

Hi all. I know I am delayed in introducing myself but I just found this board today. I have been a DreamHost customer for almost a year and love the atmosphere here.

I am a Paramedic of 7 yrs. and have been into the web thing for about 3 yrs. In case you are wondering about my nickname...well, on the web I am a disaster and at my job I am a master....hence the name. (my real name is Sonia.) Oh well, at least I serve a purpose somewhere. LOL

I am a self taught HTML'er of 2 yrs. I have sucessfully created 4 web sites. Someone just gave me Front Page a few months ago and for the life of me, I can't figure that thing out. Go figure...

I am a mother and wife. My days usually consist of sleeping late when I am not pulling a 24 hr. shift, cleaning, doing the mom thing and then drifting off into "web geekdom". Do ya'll ever drift off into your monitor screen and are totally unaware of your surroundings? HAHA!! By the way, I am from Alabama. Can't you hear the southern drawl?

Anyway...nuff about me. Nice to meet everyone. I enjoy making new friends and this seems like a pretty secure place.

Hi,
My name is Tonya, I am 28 years young..soon to be 29. Been married 7 years, and we live in NC....orginally from upstate NY though :) I have been with dreamhost over 2 years, i think? I know i drive them crazy, with all the moving around i do, and the questions i ask about CGI...and for the life of me, i still cannot figure it out! *sigh*

There's no way i would ever leave these guys, i mean heck they put up with me, i would be crazy to leave! Seriously dreamhost is the best!

I currently have 3 domains hosted here, and soon will be more :) I too am self taught on HTML, i built my first website a little over 3 years ago, right when i was learning how to surf the web, so yep i am a newbie to computers, compared to some...ok most people :)

As for the frontpage...i know what your saying! 6 months, many horrible words, and several temper tantrums later, I sorta figured it out :)

Well i look forward to getting to know everyone, and hopefully learning from you guys on how to install these blasted scripts and other things :)

Tonya

I must concur. For a graphical editor, DreamWeaver is about as good as it gets (and the name really sits well with us at DreamHost).

As for FrontPage, I would avoid it like the pox or the plague (pick your favorite). It's an evil, nasty program that generates non-standard, ugly HTML and causes all sorts of quirks. I personally dislike it in a very un-mild way. :>

I have to agree with Gerbil, though, on the merits of writing your own HTML. It looks like Greek when you first start, but at the very least it makes it easier to clean up the strange HTML generated by the graphic editors (plus, it's easier to add new stuff before your graphical editor supports it).

I much prefer editting everything myself by hand to using generators. All the excess crap that they use to do things that can be done very simply without the use of four-hundred tables and all these extra tags, is just not necessary and makes for very messy (and very hard to edit later) pages.

What the heck, I'm bored, so here goes...

My name is Justin, I'm a hardcore Linux hacker (read: hacker, not cracker). I signed up only yesterday, and so far I really like the server setup.

I used to work for a webhost, doing tech support, then heavy coding, then some sysAdmin work. I host most of my sites there, but my latest project goes against their TOS (adult-oriented)... so here I am :)

Anyway, aside from a couple of (very minor) annoyances (which I posted about elsewhere), I'm pretty happy with the server and configuration. The setup process went pretty smoothly, and within an hour I was playing around and familiarizing myself with Debian (I'm mostly a RedHat person, but the two are very similar).

I code mostly in PHP, Perl, and C, and I use MySQL extensively. HTML must be hand coded, there simply is no other way. I do 99% of my editing work directly on the server via ssh. Favorite shell is bash. If I had to choose between vi and emacs I'd go vi; otherwise, I use mcedit most of the time. Always compile from sources. DSL connection, heavily firewalled. My Windows to Linux ratio at home is 3.5:1.5 (3 Linux boxen, 1 dual boot notebook, and 1 obligatory overclocked Windows gaming box ;) I think that about covers the geek bio...

Final tidbit about myself is that I never, ever post in forums unless I've been awake for a very long time. So don't mind me ;)

Hi, I have just opened a dreamhost account and will be moving my pages over hear after more than half a dozen years at MCS.net. In this time I stubbornly refused to get my own domain name in some kind of pretense that this stuff wasn't controlling my life. Of course, my primary pages were known as the ModemJunkie's Portal <http://www.mcs.net/~grossman/> and Reflections of a ModemJunkie <http://www.mcs.net/~grossman/mjnk>. The site has grown like topsy, including a a lot of community service pages and other stuff as well.

Now, Winstar, which, purchased MCS has abruptly announced the end of dialup accounts and refuses to discuss ways to arrange for continued hosting of my pages. To give you an idea of what I need to do, see <http://www.mcs.net/~grossman/moving.html>.

Of course, when I created these pages I had no clue about relative paths etc, so I can't just move the stuff over, I have to clean it up.

Enough about that. Are there any people here who would like to set up an e-mail list or exchange of addresses outside of the forums to enable quick exchange of Qs & As between frustrated newbies (well, I am new to this kind of webhosting) and old hands. Let me know at grossman@mcs.net (until len@LGrossman.com starts functioning).

Cheers,

Leonard

An old script I used for when I moved to dreamhost to help me with linking path changes. All you have todo is type in the URL of the page you want to modify (http://www.mcs.net/~grossman/), what you want to replace (http://www.mcs.net/~grossman/), and what you want to replace it with (http://www.LGrossman.com/).

Now it's been forever since I brought this thing out of storage, it's been there for several eons, so if you experience any problems with it then let me know. It will print out your code on the html page so you will have to copy all and paste it into a document and save it.

Edit(ion):
Figured I would just post a linked example from above:

Enjoy.
