Curious About DreamHost?

Does it bother anyone else that 80+% of the posts in the "Curious About DreamHost?" forum are off-topic rants or questions from existing customers? Do you think this is intentional or do you think this is reflective of the general lack of attention, intelligence, or courtesy of the posters?

It bothers me that this forum, which used to be given a prominent place on the front page of the Dreamhost site, is now relegated to obscurity on the support information page. I don't think it's coincidental that this is because people took advantage of the fact that the headlines from this forum were posted and linked from the front page to indiscriminately try to deface the front page of a host they were (mostly unreasonably) unhappy with.

I'm appalled at the unprofessional behavior displayed by the generally one-time posters. As much so as I'm mostly impressed by the professional behavior of the long-time posters here.

It bothers me to a degree, but I *try* (yeah, I'm not always successful at that) to ignore the bulk of it. I see it as more of the "it's all about me" attitude that those who "shout in a hotel lobby" have when they think they are not getting the attention they deserve, and the result of DreamHost's steadfast commitment to not censoring these forums.

This makes it appealing for every idiot who doesn't think his "OMG! People Are Dying! emergency" support request is being dealt with as rapidly as he thinks it should be to come to this forum and throw a fit with a provocative title.

Yes, I think it is intentional (in most cases) and, "Yes", I think it *is* "reflective of the general lack of attention, intelligence, or courtesy of the posters". wink

Like this last twit that just posted in *this* forum because he hasn't yet gotten a support response (even though it has been less than 24 hours, and DH says that is the time frame in which they endeavor to respond to support requests). Just look at his history in the forums here, and you will see that he has only posted posted in this "Curious About DreamHost" forum once since over a year ago when he was *evaluating* DreamHost. He has made extensive use of the *other* forums over the last year, and has been helped by many of us in those forums. Now he gets his panties in a knot, and comes over here to throw a fit.

It's almost like he's thinking, "I'll teach them not to keep me waiting, I'll go bash support in the 'Curious' forum if they keep me waiting". He quite likely knows his post is mis-categorized here, but he's seen others do it, so he does too. He's just wanting attention and possibly feels he'll get it "faster" if he tries to "embarrass" DreamHost. Meh, I just write that off to a personality defect, and or lack of business and/or social skills ... or that maybe he is twelve years old ...whatever; I won't be bothered to give a flying rat's ass about his problem next time he posts with a question or asking for help.

Hear, hear!

The ammount of ignorant, egotistical belligerence that's been shown in Curious over the last month or so is amazing. Until, that is, you take into consideration their real reason for posting in that particular forum.

I reckon replying with nothing but a link to the correct board and letting it die on the vine might be a proper response to any more tantrumic posts that pop up there in future. Or better yet, replying to the post in a new thread in the correct board then supplying just the link to it as a reply to the initial topic.

That's a good idea...but I'm wondering: What exactly *is* the "correct board" for general asshattedness? smile

Promotion? "*public relations*" - I know I'm never going to be a customer of the folks who complain in the way that they do.
Offtopic? "and get to know your fellow DreamHost customers" - I know more about them in one post than I ever wanted to, I suspect.

I figure that General Troubleshooting is the direction that those conversations usually take because they relate to general trouble that people have with their hosting.

That would be the water board.

I hardly spend any time in that section. I beleive most of the posts are just to make DH look bad and hope it ruins a sale for them.
I honestly beleive the moderators should spend more time in that forum and either lock the thread or better yet remove it.

There really seems to be no way it could be anything other than attention seeking complainers - they would be the same people who complain about the double bililng then run off when they get extra $5,000 in credit (as seen from the blog).

It seems every week there will be a couple of new threads that the email is slow, or that support isn't responding, instead of adding to the similar thread there on the same page as their gripe.

One interesting thing would be if people would post their actual support ticket when they claim not to have had a response. Even during the worst of blingy off season, I was able to get a response from support within a day and that was not on the highest level of urgency. I can only assume they either a) went off on a similar rant as they do on the forum or b) didn't look at their email they signed up with or even the support history section.

There's probably also the set of Einsteins who put their Dreamhost hosted email account as their support contact address.

(Actually, I have to admit to having done that once at a previous host.)

I thought about doing that. In hind sight, now I can see the reason why not to. Never even occured to me that the email may go down same time as the site. Now I am glad I didn't.

And don't forget those that don't even host, or have an account, here but drop by now and then to "sow the seeds of discontent" hoping in some nebulous way to benefit from those deciding *NOT* to host here because of the "bad press" ... "Hey, for every 10 I convince not to use DreamHost, maybe 1 or 2 of them will sign up with *me*!" wink

I did try to sign up with the email account hosted on here - but it warns you right away telling you not to do so as you may not receive emails that you want from support if something goes wrong with your hosting account.
