Installing Mplayer + Mencoder

I've been trying to install Mplayer + Mencoder via SSH, but was only able to compile it and not install it because of insufficient privileges to /usr/local/bin is there a way to do this?

Can Dreamhost do it for me? (Unlikely), or even if I purchase DH PS then can I do it?
