Paypal Direct Payments/Pear

A client has decided they want to use Paypal Direct payments. I'm in the process of trying to set up the sandbox on a subdomain to use for testing.

Reading through the Paypal docs for the PHP sdk, they mention on shared hosting environments that you have to do a custom pear setup and "force" the pear path (ie, using ini_get).

However, they also say you can use the WebConsole to modify profiles and such, but there isn't any info on if I need to put the pear "force" code in any webconsole files or what.

Has anyone set up Paypal Direct payments on DH? I did fine with the instructions up until it started talking about installing pear. Do I really need to do a custom install?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I haven't done this before and I'm a little lost. Thanks!

The client thinks that Paypal standard is too invasive. He wants to accept CC right on his site, which is what I'm trying to set up.

I'm building a custom shopping cart, so I don't mind taking the extra time to learn how to do this the first time because I'll reuse that code and this experience over and over.

However......I'm stumped at the moment. In fact, as soon as I figure this out, I believe I'm going to add it to the wiki. Paypal hosts thousands and thousands of sites, there's got to be another shmuck out there just as lost as I am. :)
