add IP

I'm in the process of moving my website to dreamhost. Right now the site (www.hogbaysoftware.com) is still hosted on another server while I try to get everything working on dreamhost at the default address that they provided (www.hogbaysoftware.dreamhosters.com).

One thing that I want to add is SSL support for a shopping cart, and to do that it looks like I need to add an IP to www.hogbaysoftware.dreamhosters.com for $15 + 4.95. Of course once I get everything working I will transfer my www.hogbaysoftware.com domain to dreamhost.

My question is will I need to pay for another IP so that my store will work on www.hogbaysoftware.com, or is there a way that I can do this so I only need to pay once?

Thanks,
Jesse

From what I understand that fee is just to guarentee a dedicated ip address. So that ip address won't be used by others. Apparently on a shared system, the ip address change from time to time as though they are in a pool and then asigned to a user. Paying the fee keeps that ip address from going back into that pool.

I think what you'd do is set up your domain with dreamhost (the actual one you'll be using in the end) then set up a mirrored domain at dreamhosters. Then you can buy the IP address for the domain you'll be using and get it all set up, testing and viewing with the mirrored sub-domain - whatever.dreamhosters.com.

You may end up with a SSL certificate mismatch since the first domain is not the same as the 2nd. Might want to be sure to get the cert' for the 2nd, and tolerate mismatch while testing.

Good luck,
