set Wordpress to www

I can't seem to set Wordpress to www. Each time I install Wordpress and specify "www", instead of "blog", the URL is just http://mywebsite.com without the "www".
I just closed my Dreamhost webhosting service but kept the domain name, which at this point is simply "empty". I have Google apps which is hosting my emails. I'd really like to use Dreamhost apps to host a simple blog. At the very least, I'd like http://www.mywebsite.com to point to a blank page.
