Yes, with thanks to rlparker for showing us the trick, there is a neat little "hack" you can use while you wait for your hostname DNS to be available:
If your hostname is "mysql.yourdomain.com", you can access it via phpmyadmin with the url:
http://www.dreamhost.com/dh_phpmyadmin/mysql.yourdomain.com/
