Think of them more as domain credits, which you can use for transferring existing domains or registering new ones.

If you mean to transfer domain from other sites to DH, you do not have to use 555 promo code. You can host unlimited domains in DH no matter you register them in DH or pointing them to DH.

Btw, you do not need to transfer domain to DH, you can just point them to DH by modifying DNS to ns1.dreamhost.com ns2.dreamhost.com ns3.dreamhost.com

Don't let them expire, or you'll get stuck having to renew them at your old registrar, waiting 60 days, then transferring them.

Some registrars drag their feet when it comes to releasing domains, so it's not a good idea to put it off until the last minute.

Haven't you seen the pop-up on the DreamHost website?
