You should also note that promo codes can give you either a cash discount or additional free features - for instance, you could get two, three or even seven total lifetime domain registrations (lifetime of your hosting with DreamHost). Alternatively, if you're going to be hosting an e-commerce site and need SSL, it would behoove you to get a free lifetime unique IP address - you still have to buy a cert, but you'll save the ~$48 a year that would have to pay for that unique IP address.

There are lots of codes around and as everyone has already said, you should feel free to choose the code that gives you the best deal.

Tor's reply is right on the money - isn't there more than adequate promocode pandering already on these forum without soliciting for more? wink

I'm not promoting. It's simply a signature! (Cheap isn't it?)

The reality is that anything beyond a sig is annoying - and even then promo codes in sigs are annoying too. But if you generate decent content and answer questions it really can get you referrals. I was surprised.

Heh Heh..yep! I'm used to, and don't particularly mind, the sig promos, and the opportunity to pick up some "good will" referral money from participating in the forums with helpful content seems fair enough - I just think it can get out of hand, and a whole thread dedicated to "pimp your code" seems like a bit much to me. wink

Yeah, this thread would probably have felt less like a swap meet if it had started with a simple question like "what's the best promo code for me?" I'm sure it would still have ended up just as mobbed by thinly veiled pandering. smile

Hi guys,

I don't understand how come I can get $97 discount for 1 year of hosting with your promo code? I mean, if I get $97 discount, then I get 1 year of hosting for free. Why would dreamhost give me 1 year of hosting for free WITHOUT a CATCH?

Please explain guys, thanks.

Re: Dump your Affiliate Promo Codes here!

Posted on: 2007-04-09 14:17:00

Well, you do pay $22.30 for that first year.

Regardless, the $97 is probably considered by DreamHost as a cost of acquisition of you as a customer. They are depending on the fact that a certain percentage of people will renew their hosting contract and that ultimately, they'll make their money back and more!

Re: Dump your Affiliate Promo Codes here!

Posted on: 2007-04-09 18:16:00

So I only pay $22.30 with your promo code?

You must be kidding me. Are you serious? Is this serious? Lensman, please respond. Are you 100% serious?

Posted on: 2007-04-09 18:27:00

we are not joking here. If you purchase level 1 plan with a promo code which gives $97 discount (max discount), you pay only 22.40 for level 1 plan for the first year.

However, when it is time to renew your plan, you have to pay full amount which is $119.40. Promo code is only available for new customers. wink

Re: Dump your Affiliate Promo Codes here!

Posted on: 2007-04-09 18:40:00

The promocode is only for your first year so it is really very attractive.

You must notice in advance that Dreamhost had measurement to prevent customer to stop one promoted account and use promocode to create another account. You cannot transfer domain between 2 accounts which used promocode.

It is insane. But it's what they feel they're willing to give you to try their service. Many are quite happy and moving off DH is a real pain in the butt after a year.

DON'T get any strange ideas about trying to beat the system. They've been doing this for 10 years they've seen most of the tricks and have rules in place to stop it. They have also been known to give people that do try "Lifetime bans"

They actually lose a bit more than the $97 due to secondary referrals giving away $5 or 5% of payments.

This also cuts down on what people who have successful referrals pay in subsequent years.

Posted on: 2007-04-09 19:17:00

As others have said. It's true. $22.40 for the first year and $119.40 per year after that.

The costs to DreamHost are the same as other hosting providers that provide affiliate payments. The difference is that it's the actual new customers who benefit the most rather than the affiliates.

I possess a little known affiliate promo code:

just enter:

SERVERSALWAYSDOWN or DOWNTIMEFORDOLLARS or NIGHTMAREHOST or AFFILIATEWHORES

these will all get you the top bonus possible, plus will make me a little richer and I will receive the add-on bonus of knowing that I brought another person aboard and my 'apologist' peeps will have mad respect for me :p

That's interesting! It seems that you have changed your position a bit since one of the last times you decided to post your witticisms here. wink Back in August, 2006, you let us all know:

In reply to:

....those of you that know me, know that i do not believe in promo codes or even adsense ;)

Actaully, those of us who have been around here for a while are *starting* to *know* you at least a little; You show up every now and then, express your extreme frustration with DH service, and then disappear again - only to resurface again months later and , would you believe it, *still* hosting sites at DH in *spite* of how displeased you are with their service.

It's starting to look more than a little bit masochistic! smile At any rate, "Welcome Back!"..it's reassuring to know that you are really *not* "at your wits end!"

Oh yeah, and good luck with those promo codes that you "don't believe in."

The system has a length limit, so it's really:

SERVERSALWAYSDOW or DOWNTIMEFORDOLLA

> NIGHTMAREHOST AFFILIATEWHORES

Oh no you don't! cool Post away ok!

RLP,

come-on buddy, I know for a fact you just didn't fall for my little witticisms there, did ya? :p

knowing how you know me, you had to know that those are completely fictitious promo codes....read them slowly, you will see :)

Anyways, thanks for welcoming me back....i've been off designing on a few other hosts lately and haven't been paying too much attention to my DH sites until that DDoS thing hit and all of my sites have been down since than - I have learned to look past the shoddy e-mail performance, 95% uptime, and furious mysql issues...but biggies like this one demanded my immediate B&M...anyways, I STILL H8 those that push affiliate codes and I still despise the likes of adsense - but that is just me, nobody else's opinion.

He he..no, I didn't really "fall" for them, but I was just yankin' your chain a bit (and hoping to dissuade some from actually "trying" them and getting frustrated when they didn't work) wink.
