Well I am currently registered but am concerned about next year.
I do not want to pay $120 for my web host when I originally paid $27 is there anyway you can lower that price?
I know that you can not use promo codes on your second year of hosting.

unfortunately, you can't use promo code when you renew your plan and the original price should be $120.

there are few ways to help your bill. One is as Madd mentioned that you can create promo codes and get referrals. The other is to ask ppl to donate to your site. The donation will go to your bill. You may want to check

From elsewhere I had read that Dreamhost is quite firm on not offering discount for the first renewal after the large promocode discount. This is also how they can earn some money. If they charge everyone 22.4 (the best promocode for now) for every year, how can they support the company to run?

For me, I choose a lifetime IP and registered for 2 years.

You can refer to DH's website for more info. http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting-rewards.html

It is a pyramid scheme but there are only two levels. You can get max $97 from your direct referrals and $5 from your sub-referrals.

Re: Promo Code

Posted on: 2007-04-03 18:17:00

What is a lifetime IP and how would that help? Could you explain that?

Is it that same as a domain (sorta)?

Can you explain what a sub and direct referal is?

Re: Promo Code

Posted by: Justmade
Posted on: 2007-04-03 18:24:00

As you can see when you create the promocode that you can reduce the discount for some other stuff.

Lifetime IP is you just need to reduce US$30 for a unique IP as long as you host in Dreamhost. It is need for build up SSL (https) site or if you want to play with it. Extra lifetime domain for US$15 is also good choice if you want to host multi domains as it add extra free domains registration as long as you host with Dreamhost. These reduce the long term payment.

However, if you are only doing some simple hosting, you may well change to other domain for the join discount after 1 year of hosting here.

It's actually more of a multi-level marketing scheme.

Re: Promo Code

So lets say that you can not afford the $120, is it easy to transfer?

What is the difference between sub and direct referrals?

Re: Promo Code

Posted by: Lensman
Posted on: 2007-04-03 18:34:00

First of all, you have to decide whether you like the hosting services here and whether they are worth $96-$120 a year to you. If you think you can get a better deal for the services offered somewhere else, you should go there. If you think DreamHost is providing a good value at that price, you should stay.

Under no circumstances can I recommend trying to get around the intent of the DreamHost promotional offers by trying to benefit from the introductory offer multiple years in a row. That's trying to cheat DreamHost and that's not ethical.

Now let's talk about trying to monetize your site(s). Do you have one or more sites? Do they make money through paid goods or services or are they free content sites? Are they for personal or family use or do they provide a free service or content for the public?

Are you asking whether it's easy to move your site to another hosting provider? If so, it depends on what kind of content you have. Are you running a web application or just hosting static content?

In reply to:

Direct referrals are people who sign up using your promo code (or through your referral link or naming you as the referring email address). Sub-referrals are referrals of your referrals - they are your secondary referrals aka tier-2 referrals. Note that you don't get any payments for tertiary (tier-3) referrals.

Seriously! $120 a year is $10 a month - 4 cups of Starbucks coffee, 2.75 gallons of gasoline in California, two trips to McDonalds for a cheap lunch, one movie ticket, etc....

Well, I do not drink coffee, can't drive, my parents pay for my food and I go to about 5 movies a year. Big dent in my budget! The most expensive thing I bought was my computer, $800 $200 video card.

Heh, ain't that the truth! It's how we all made ends meet at your age. My first summer job was tutoring fractions and algebra. My second summer job was painting houses. My tan was better after the second summer but I kept finding paint in my hair and nails until midterms that fall.

You didn't answer about your age, though you *did* point me to a second site mockup (which shows promise, but is no indication of whether or not you can/have actually built a working site). I was considering whether you might qualify for me passing some web-monkey work to you, or how feasible it might be to refer you a client. wink

Your earlier posts in the forum indicate that you use subdomains, so I was hopeful you would have at least one functioning site I could look at to evaluate the suitability of offering you piece-work projects.

Hopefully, you won't have trouble affording the lower priced DH plans if you work *at all* in the summer, or do any web development at all. You said you are still in school, so you might check with the school employment counselors to say if they have any suggestions.

If you can't come up with $10/month, you should probably adjust your hosting budget to $0 until your financial situation improves.

Also, don't forget that if you go somewhere else, you also have to start paying for your domain name. The free domain is only free while you host with DH.

If can get a site with a minimum traffic/month you can also try Google Adsense. You can earn through Adsense in many ways. First is showing ad/banners on your site and put Google search on your site. There're two ways Google will pay you through these-pay per impressions and pay per clicks(you can't choose only one,so both are active method). You can also get money through refering people to Adsense,Adwords,Firefox,Google pack etc. You get $1 for each Firefox download and $2 for Google pack. But you can earn upto $250 for each Adsense referal. If your referal earn $100 within the first 6 months of his/her sign up to adsense you'll get $250. Isn't it interesting? Ofcourse. But you've to work harder and all you've to do is get as more traffic as possible. Google adding more offers day by day. I think if you work rightly with you can have much more than $120 at the end of the yearsmile

Promo codes for you:
FUN=$97 off
FUN55=50% xtra disk & transfer
FUN6=xtra 6 domain
FUNIP=1 IP + $60 off
FUN1D=double disk space

I am turning 15 this Saturday.

I also avoid flash not user friendly and google has a hard time with it. It does look good though.

My site currently just has templates on it and some of the templates are broken (playing around in the FTP erased some image files and too lazy to put them back up). I want my site to be perfect so I am trying to make the perfect template for it. Currently all of my templates are fluid.

I would be happy to take a small job but it might take a while (shcool etc). If you want me to code a site that is not fluid that should be quite easy. I am somewhat good with photoshop but nothing spectacular.

I am going to learn C next year and hopefully learn PHP after that. I really need to learn PHP.

I hear that you need a lot of traffic to make money with adsense. My friend used to use it and he made about $1.

I couldn't agree more! And for the service you get with Dreamhost, it is worth way more. The fact that I don't have to run a server anymore and worry about patches, hard drives failing, etc makes it worth well over $120 for me. I've been with Dreamhost for over 2 years and could not be happier.

I agree that learning PHP will be a great help to you in your development work.

It *is* true that you will need considerable traffic to make any significant money with adsense; you may have more success with peddling referrals in the DH Rewards program.

Tell your parents to get you a lawn mower for your birthday. That could generate way more than enough money to cover hosting.

If you were to mow one neighbor's lawn, for a super-low price of $10/week, that give you an extra $40/month.

Rake leaves, wash cars, walk dogs, etc...

The internet can be a great source of income, but as a 15-year old without experience, I'd get used to manual labor as a source of income for awhile.

If you're a good kid, it shouldn't be hard to find a few people that will create work for you to help you out. That might not be the case if you happen to be one of the many teens out there that are wearing super-baggy clothes & gold chains, pretending to be straight out of a rap video. tongue

You could even just go around telling people that you're trying to earn money and ask them if they have anything you can do. That way, you're not just cornering them with something specific like cutting grass, which they might have no use for. If nothing else, maybe they'll at least give you $1 to carry their trash out to the curb on your way to the next house.

Selling yourself in real life will also help out with marketing whatever you end up doing online.

Re: Promo Code

No, it's more of a long-term thing where your referrals will over the years refer others and you'll ultimately benefit from their referrals more than you'll benefit from your referrals. The DreamHost referral system is very altruistic in that way.

Alternatively, you can hawk referrals codes from one of your primary referrals. This will net you the secondary referral fee immediately and they'll benefit from any further referrals off of people using that code.

BTW, I refer to this scheme as more of a multi-level marketing scheme than a pyramid scheme.

Re: Promo Code

Posted by: monkeyboy7706
Posted on: 2007-04-04 14:59:00

Basicaly you have $97, anything you offer comes off of that so if you offer the full discount you get nothing. If the person you refer gets a referral you get $5.

If you switch the different scheme will only kick in if someone doesn't use a promo code. With a promo code it is always $97 minus whatever the promo code offers.

Sorry still confused. So when do I start seeing the money/rewards? At my next bill?
How do I see the money right now?

You choose how much of your $97 you want to pass onto the customer. You can just use a referral link & keep the full $97, but you're probably not going to get many sign-ups on a forum where just about everyone gives it all away.

If they had signed up for a monthly plan, you would have gotten the difference between the max discount & $97.

The $5 referrals can add up as well.

The two-tier system benefits you. Most hosts only give you a one-time referral. You get what you decide on the first level, plus an additional $5/each on the second.

Even if the person belows you makes $0 on a referral, you'll still get $5.

If I gave a $30 discount I would get $67?

Re: Promo Code

You get $5 for each person they refer, if any.

On direct referrals, you get $97 minus any discount you give out. If you give out $97, then you get zero--unless they refer people, which will pay you $5 each.

Re: Promo Code

Re: Promo Code

Or if you don't give them a discount--at least not the full $97. You can refer people for $97 each, but like I said, don't count on many sign-ups from this forum, where they'll easily find a $97 discount.

Plus, people still sign up for the monthly L1 plan. If they sign up for that with your $97 code, you'll still get $47--plus $5 each for anyone they refer.

MaxMonth - Get the max discount on any monthly plan!

Re: Promo Code

Posted by: monkeyboy7706
Posted on: 2007-04-04 17:55:00

I'll try to clarify.

If someone clicks a link from you or says you refer them WITHOUT USING A PROMO CODE you get whatever method you have chosen either $97 or 10% of whatever they spend with the corresponding secondary referal of $5 or 5%.

If however they use a promo code it is always $97 minus what discount you gave and this overrides the standard referal meaning you can't get the 10% with promocodes. If on your promo code you have offered discounts these get taken off of your $97 and passed to the customer. If you give a $97 discount this removes all of your $97, if you give a $50 discount (someone who signs up with monthly L1 will only get this as maximum) you get $47.

Changing your reward payment type only makes a difference if they sign up without a code. the ammount you get from a code depends on what offer you give.

Re: Promo Code

Posted by: Justmade
Posted on: 2007-04-04 18:30:00

I' add a bit of information which seems not clearly stated so far.

For primary referral, it is as clarified by monkeyboy that when promo code is used, it automatically turn to one time reward payment type.

However, for secondary referral, no matter promo code is used or not, it depend on your choice of one time $5 or long term 5%.

That is, if you got a secondary referral who used full promo code and your choice is long term 5%, you will get 5% of what they pay now and any payment they pay later.

Yeah, it's too late now but it would have been nice if DreamHost had made the max discount $92 or something like it so us primary referrers would get something.

Maybe one of these days DreamHost will up the bonus to $102 so you still get something from a primary referral.

No, you misunderstand my proposal. My idea is to keep the cap of $97 on the discount but for DreamHost to pay out $102 in referral fees. This would mean that short of paypal'ing your referrees money, everyone would get $5 per referral.

Just imagine if Dreamhost had capped the discounts at $50. Everyone would be making $47 per referral!

We could have a long discussion of the math of the situation, but it would be nice to get 5% of revenue as an alternative to the 5 extra dollars!

Anyway, as you all suggest, if wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.

We've already had guys give rebates out of their own pockets. It's crazy. The reality is that DH has determined that a new customer is worth $97. Now if we all pulled back to $50, we would get less people to sign up.
