Moving my entire site to Dreamhost

Hi there! Im planning on moving my entire article directory(around 40k articles/pages) site to dreamhost and I just want to know how the process works with DH. My current web host uses cpanel which means i can make a back up of my entire site. It would be great if i can do the moving myself from DH's Web Panel or SSH. I havent tried SSH before though but I can learn fast. :)

I just want to make sure before i sign up with dreamhost.

Any help please?
Thanks in advance.

Here's the official story:

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Transfer_your_site_to_us

There are faster/better ways than the download to PC, upload to server game, to transfer data from your old host to new host.

you can unzip/untar files in DH with ssh

If you can put your backup in a web accessible area on your current host/server, and get your account open on DreamHost, you can ssh into the DreamHost server and use wget to transfer your backup directly.

Search the wiki, and the Force will be with you. Let others search it for you, and you will perish. :-)

How long does it take them to setup my hosting account?

If you pay using credit card, they will approve your account within 24 hours after they receive your fax.

24 hours, don't count on it. I've been waiting since Friday and they don't even feel the need to reply to my inquiry about if they even got a fax.

It's getting very frustrating and it doesn't reflect good at all on what I can expect from them in the future. Too bad, they came highly recommended.

well, mine was approved within 24 hours. I faxed the form from singapore. They approved my account the next day. But I wasted more than one week to sign up plan, cancel plan, sign up new plan, and transfer domain. If you have something urgent, send the support team an eamil marked as URGENT. PEOPLE ARE DYING. They will then reply to you very fast :P

If you're paying from a verified paypal account it should happen quickly.

yes, if you make payment using paypal, you don't need to fax them the form. They will directly approve your account shortly. But you can't enjoy the discount $97 dollar.

how long has it been since you completed the application? I have heard of some applications taking a few days to approve.

I've been waiting since the 8th. But I managed to get an email back after nagging support and billing: "I'll forward your inquiry to our billing departement". Yeah, I'm going to forward my money somewhere else soon too, it's pretty ridiculous.

Bah.

Signed up yesterday using Paypal (and got the discount).... and also got "I'll forward your inquiry to our billing department" when I asked about the activation time.

Oh well. Sounds if I've got to wait a few more days - I think they've just got their hands full.

I think you may be right, probably due to the recent influx of new customers taking advantage of the anniversary promo-code.

Or they lose/can't find your fax as I was just being told after waiting 6 days (as of today). I had to refax today so I guess I'll be waiting another week before they tell me they can't find that one either.

I understand being busy, but that fax had credit card information and a signature on it and now who knows where that thing is. Thanks DreamHost.

I finally got my dreamhost account activated. I just received an email just now. :)

Just be patient for those who are still waiting for their account to be activated.

The thing is, I wouldn't mind paying with google checkout or whatever.

They should really post a disclaimer that if you use a credit card, you'll have to fax something in and wait a while - it's been a week for me. That's really ghetto and actually kind of sad.

That is an opinion that has been often stated in these forums. According to Dreamhost Honcho Michael, "Most new customers don't have to fax anything in. It is not an error that people are not warned in advance."

It sounds to me like they have determined they do not want to publish a disclaimer that applies to a relatively few transactions, and they do not want to enter a discussion about what circumstances "trigger" the fax request.

Some may feel they should handle that differently than the way the now do it, but it *is* DH's decision to make, and they appear to have made it. wink

Sorry, but the official position:

http://discussion.dreamhost.com/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=curious&Number=63442

is:

"Most new customers don't have to fax anything in. It is not an error that people are not warned in advance. Anonymous sure is annoying." (for suggesting they should have a warning/disclaimer, among other things)

Well, that's great, I guess I should consider myself lucky that I had to fax something in and wait a week (+?) for them to "approve" an account. It's not like there are modern authentication systems out there, but dreamhost has to use technology from the 30's for "authentication"

In the mean time, my domain transfer has been shot to hell and I'll probably end up re-registering the domain name from scratch.

Does anyone know if I will be billed twice if I use google checkout? I want this to just work. I see they are already holding funds on my credit card...

Yeah, it *is* frustrating, though it sounds like you were more *unlucky* than "lucky" wink.

I have no idea how trying to now put the transaction through google checkout would affect your situation, and suspect that, since DH's use of google checkout was just recently added as a payment option, your best bet for getting an authoritative answer on that would be to contact DH support directly. Good luck with your situation!

I think most of the ppl faced the same problem. We'll wait for at least a week to get the account activated. This is really frustrating. It's obvious that they are very careful with cc payment.

Well, most of the people *posting here about the problem* have certainly faced that situation; others signing up (DH says most others) would have no reason to post here about the problem that they never experienced. wink

Checking dreamhoststatus.com would have shown you that support email may have been caught over the weekend.

They may have just gotten it recently.
