Potential customer/a couple of questions

Hello,

I am having problems with my website which needs more bandwidth than what my reseller account with another company can afford...so, I'm about to join your "family" soon.

However, I have a couple of questions.

How much is your webpanel different from the cpanel the most of hosts have? Or is it the same...?

Is there a feature to upload files without ftp? I am asking because I have a lot of big files, dial-up at home and firewall which blocks ftp, p2p and torrenting at home.

The Dreamhost Control Panel is *entirely* different from cPanel. While I find it to be much more powerful and flexible, users who are only experienced with cPanel seem to have varying degrees of difficulty adapting to it. Generally, those with good technical understanding of webhosting in general, and *nix operating systems in particular, have almost no trouble quickly adapting, and are invariably *thrilled* with the added power! Others often take a while to "find their way around" but, once they understand how it works and where to go to accomplish their needs, they prefer it to cPanel.

Dreamhost does have a "web-based" ftp that provides you a way to upload in the circumstances you describe, but as it is a PHP based program, it can only upload files that are a maximum size of 8 MB. You can install other scripts on your webspace (such as perl-based file-managers, uploaders, etc) to provide a work-around for this limitation if you desire.

Is there such a program you'd recommend? I have some video files which are around 70-80 Mb in size and uploading them from home would take...6 hours or so, so I prefer to upload them from office.

Truthfully, I personally do not feel comfortable recommending *any* "http based" program for uploading files of *that* size in a "shared hosting" environment (there is just too much that can interfere with successful completion of your upload in such a situation frown ). Hopefully, another user on these forums can recommend such a program that works well for them.

I suggest you visit hotscripts.com and look around there (avoid PHP programs, for the reason I described in my earlier post), and see what offerings are available.

Does your firewall block port 22 (ssh) ?

If not, you can use it to upload your files.

Use a soft like http://winscp.net for sftp

if OP is using his office system, he is unlikely to have access to much besides HTTP and maybe email.

maybe he/she can contact sys-admin and have the required ports opened. outbound only should be enough if the firewall has stateful packet inspection.

That is a good suggestion; though I suspect his/her "word" sys-admin *might* not be real thrilled with the idea of him/her using the work system/pipe to upload bunches of 70-80 MB files wink

I think we might have overlooked a very significant question. Are these large files already uploaded to your current host? It sounds like they probably are, otherwise you might not already know there is a hosting bandwidth issue.

In the event you've still got them on the old host and haven't cancelled your account yet, there are a couple pretty easy alternatives that the users here can help with. You can easily transfer the files directly from server to server at high speed, using a shell account or simple php page to handle the connection. This way you completely bypass your slow home internet connection for the existing files.

Not sure if you were talking about scripts to overcome the maximum upload file size limit, or a dedicated transfer script like I was describing, rlparker.

Actually, I *was* thinking more about getting around the file-size limitation, so your post was a good "expansion" of that idea. smile
